Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were roasted for “overdone airbrushing” and alleged retouching in what Time says is the couple’s first joint magazine cover shoot.
Internet sleuths zoomed and enhanced on the glowing skin of Meghan, 40, and the plush hairline of Harry, who turned 37 on Wednesday.
“The airbrush is doing some heavy lifting there,” tweeted @Ddenouncement.
“Is Harry wearing a rug? Or just overdone the airbrushing?” added @KevinYounger20.
Others thought the cover was a fake, with @AnnabelAttenbo1 saying: “Jesus I thought this was a parody account with a clearly photoshopped creepy cover. Then I noticed the blue tick. Wow has @TIME fallen. Hard.”
Neither TIME, a spokesperson for the Sussexes, nor the photographer, Pari Dukovic, responded to requests for comment on whether the images were heavily retouched.
A statement on teh Archwell website said Harry and Meghan were “humbled to be part of this year’s TIME 100”, which also included inductees Britney Spears, Tim Cook, and Kate Winslet. Other alumni, in no particular order, are Donald Trump, Joe Biden and the Taliban’s Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
Meghan appeared to pay tribute to Diana by wearing her gold Cartier Tank Francaise, which reportedly first belonged to Prince William after the Princess of Wales’s death.
Time editor in chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal wrote that Harry and Meghan were included on the list after having “catalysed essential conversations on topics from mental health to misinformation”.
The accompanying story, written by chef José Andrés, says Harry and Meghan don’t just opine, they “run toward the struggle”.
“Springing into action is not the easy choice for a young duke and duchess who have been blessed through birth and talent, and burned by fame. It would be much safer to enjoy their good fortune and stay silent. That’s not what Harry and Meghan do, or who they are,” Andrés wrote.
“In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the duke and duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know.”
