My dad had this experience. Spent 30 years as an industrial welder in the midwest with California seismic certification.

Last year he was helping the inspector analyze welds for his co-workers. The inspector couldn't tell the welds passed as "ok" we not in spec and would have failed at a magnitude 5. Passing is anything above magnitude 8.

This reminds me of "those that can, do; those that can't, teach" -Shaw

Lol I used to be an X-ray guy who would X-ray welds on pipelines to determine if the welds were good or if they needed fixed. I can't weld for shit but it was good money though, and learned some cool stuff about iridium-192 and gamma radiation.

It was nice sometimes, other times it was hell. The "camera" which contains the radioactive isotope weighs like 50 pounds, plus another 30 or so pounds of "cranks" and stuff I had to carry in and out of holes, and down pipelines and stuff. It was good exercise. Some days we'd get called out to "shoot" just a couple welds but get paid an 8 hour minimum. Other times I'd be out on a pipeline shooting welds and carrying equipment for 12 hours or so

I’m a CWI. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Luckily, our weld engineer was a fabricator for a long time so he is able to fix most customer prints. Its a nightmare when we get iso prints though. All hell breaks loose.
