Lived in NZ for 10 years during the 80s. Brother-in-law 'offered' me some venison. The catch was I had to go with him to help carry it out after he shot it. Did it many times. Looks like they shot a small deer for the sheila to carry.
FYI - there was no 'hunting season', anyone could go shoot a deer anytime on public land, or private with permission. The "Department of Conservation" had full-time 'cullers' on staff to go into national forests to shoot every deer they saw. They are an introduce species, with no predators and are a pest.

It was the lady who shot the deer (her first apparently). It's pretty lucky that it's basically open season on them. A family could live truly sustainably that way. Here in the States unless you bag a moose you are always short of a full year's worth of meat if you solely hunt.
