This weekend I want you to go into your closet, garage, storage, bedroom or livingroom and throw out 3 things you don't need. Not three things you haven't used (although they're related). I want you to throw out 3 things you wouldn't/couldn't take with you if you had to bug out in the mtns.
Need no, but you're damn sure I want it. I worked my ass off to obtain what I have, and every cent I throw away is a portion of my life even more wasted than it already was. Even broken things often have salvageable parts to repurpose which would cost a few dollars to buy new.
You don't need a computer, but here you are criticizing me on it. I'm sure you were also sitting in a chair at a desk when you wrote that, both of those things you also don't need. But you bought them anyway instead of food or gold, and you also aren't going to get rid of them needlessly are you?
I moved this year and dumped so much junk and sold so much on eBay, everything I own besides my car fits in a large room. I'm covered for a decade, but this is good advice.
E: Also, after the initial trepidation of throwing out something that could be used in the future (haha, more like never), you feel like a virtual weight has been lifted off you. At least, that was my experience. I am so glad I massively purged my belongings.

You can keep your computer as well. Just throw other shit out. Everything I own can be put into a full sized van.

The only one who addressed the real issues as to why I was holding onto things was Tracy McCubbin and her brilliant book "Making Space, Clutter Free."
If anyone out there is stuck getting rid of things, read her book!
Here is a link to a downloadable pdf and one to an epub if you can't afford to buy the original book now.
