The only alternative to Proton that I've heard of is CTemplar.

Never fully rely on a "no log", "privacy" company to protect you from the government.

there is one, is run by chinese citizens out of Caribbean and its called "ExpressVPN" and only china can mess with it, so most americans able to spend about 9 dollars a month use it. YOu can use crypto, you can use other unspoken creative ways to pay in advance for a year. Its the highest rated no-log privacy vpn on earth.

I wouldn't trust that one either. What if I want to say something that pisses off China? What if they are hacked into by the Feds? You know they have boatloads of money to spend on zero-day exploits, right? You can't trust any single provider. The best you can do is go through a chain where the host nations have competing interests, to make it harder to compromise them all. And even then, every connection between hosts is logged and vacuumed up into a central place, so you will still leave a fingerprint. Bottom line, don't plan crimes on the Interwebz.

One of the most chilling aspects of the whole "Russiagate" Trump story that was never made a story of its own is that somebody who had access to all this connection data took it upon themselves to determine that a Trump computer in Trump Tower had a connection to a Russian computer, and created a national news story out of it:

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/10/was_a_server_registered_to_the_trump_organization_communicating_with_russia.html

"Some of the most trusted DNS specialists—an elite group of malware hunters, who work for private contractors—have access to nearly comprehensive logs of communication between servers. They work in close concert with internet service providers, the networks through which most of us connect to the internet, and the ones that are most vulnerable to massive attacks. To extend the traffic metaphor, these scientists have cameras posted on the internet’s stoplights and overpasses. They are entrusted with something close to a complete record of all the servers of the world connecting with one another."

I was entirely unaware of this. Wow.

PR team has been waving this around forever https://protonmail.com/blog/protonmail-threat-model/

The Internet is generally not anonymous, and if you are breaking Swiss law, a law-abiding company such as ProtonMail can be legally compelled to log your IP address.

they say the same doesn't apply for their VPN, which is interesting.

I think the only way to actually be 100% encrypted is to run it through a program to encrypt it before it's in your email program. Then send and have your fren on the other side paste it into the program to unencrypt. Obviously have a VPN, as well. IDK much about PGP, but don't you type the unencrypted email into the program and it encrypts in before it the receiver gets it? If so, at what point? Before it leaves your computer? I should really understand that better.

You are right, do it outside a browser tool.

PGP,GPG,Open PGP,GnuPG is a standalone tool, but a couple times in history companies added PGP to email programs directly, like Apple did once.

There are a few alternatives, I was recommended CactusVPN and I looked through the installgentoo wiki page on the subject to find teknik.io for mail.
