I am trying to move away from the voat name, but I am having a hard time pulling the plug on it. This will be a way for users to keep the old layout when/if it goes away.

I have my reasons all written out in a post I will make if I decide to the pull the trigger. Basically the liability that comes with it, the original goal was to rebuild the community as fast as possible and using the name helped with that. I really hoped puttitout would take notice and either jump on board and/or offer up the voat.co domain name to pave way for a true revival. But that never happened, and the site is maturing to a point where I feel continuing to stick with a literal voat clone hurts more than it helps.

You can trademark VOAT yourself is $69 annual fee.
As of today just two entries are trademarked:
VOAT - selling health care products
VOAT - selling building materials

You can trademark your site too if you don't compete with those two businesses.

Only thing another two businesses can accuse you is copyright if you use their logos or site layouts.

I don't think builders and healthcare company see you as competitor so you're perfectly safe.
