The unmasking had to do specifically with US officials but it was part of the bigger issue of almost all of the western governments skirting their laws by spying on each others citizens.
Susan Rice, Susan Powers and others were unmasking redacted names of US citizens from intelligence reports. I think Carter Page was one of the names. The story had been out there for a little while in alternative media but more mainstream outlets started reporting on it as more info was being released. I just remember sometime around March 2020 it was:
1-Masks are not effective against the virus. 2-Unmasking story starts to gain some traction due to information releases ahead of the election season. 3-Mask effectiveness against the virus story started to change and mask mandates were put into place. 4-Unmasking story is buried by the search algos.
I know this happened because I specifically remember telling my wife that the mask mandates would bury unmasking info in search results. Poof, the story disappeared from the mainstream news cycle in favor of holocough reporting.
Not sure why others didn't pick up on this. Maybe they were too busy being pissed off about being in lockdown.
