Israel furious as Poland signs law limiting property rights for foreigners

The Polish president decided to sign a bill that would limit the ability of Jews to recover property seized by German Nazi occupiers and kept by post-war Communist rulers, sparking anger from Israel who called the law of “anti-Semite”.
“I made a decision today on the act, which in recent months has been the subject of heated and noisy debate at home and abroad,” Andrzej Duda said in a statement released on Saturday. .

“After careful analysis, I decided to sign the amendment. “

Before World War II, Poland was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the world, but it was almost completely wiped out by the Nazis, and the former Jewish owners and their descendants campaigned for compensation.

Until now, Jewish expatriates or their descendants could claim that a property had been illegally seized and demand its return, but the Polish authorities argued that this created uncertainty about the ownership of the property.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid criticized the decision, ordering the country’s charge d’affaires return to Warsaw on Saturday.

“Poland approved today, not for the first time, an immoral and anti-Semitic law,” Lapid said in a statement on Saturday.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called the law “shameful” and said it showed “a shameful disregard for the memory of the Holocaust”.

Israel was joined by the United States in its opposition to the legislation, and Lapid said Israel was in talks with the Americans on other plans of action.

As much as I support property rights as the foundation of civilisation, Poland is 100% right. Jews or no jews there needs to be a time limit on property disputes, otherwise everyone's living on stolen land since everywhere was invaded at one point or another. It's now almost a century after the invasion, if they haven't claimed grandpa's pawn shop back yet then tough titty.

This law has nothing to do with Jews and it has some things to do with 2nd world war. After WW2 Poland became a communist country. This meant that a lot of what was left from the country after the war became public property. The ownership of mainly real estate, land etc. was taken over by the country with administration decisions issued by various local authorities. Now the Polish law on administration says that any decision which is contrary to the rule of law may be abolished by a current authority with a new decisions. During the last 10 - 15 years, some lawyers started representing people who claimed that they represent the heirs of some long deceased owners and that the decisions which transferred the ownership of particular properties to communist Poland were invalid. As a result plenty of current owners (people who bought the properties after they had been taken over by the communist Poland) were treated as non owners and were kicked out of their houses or apartments. This was especially common in Warsaw (the capital of Poland). Of course after the properties were taken over by the "new" owners they were quickly sold. The government (finally) decided to do something about it (after actually a lot of properties were already taken over by the cheaters) and finally said that no administrative decision can be cancelled after 30 years. So who already wanted to take care of his case (claim that his property was illegally taken by the communist Poland) had plenty of time to do this (the communist government failed in 1989). So ... either the Israel government has no idea what they are talking about or they were somehow involved in the scams that took place during the last 10 - 15 years and now they are crying that the "free properties" will be not available any more.
