Which browsers are viable in 2021?

submitted by Wahaha to Linux 2.8 yearsAug 15, 2021 08:24:43 ago (+2/-1)     (Linux)

I'm still on Firefox, for lack of anything better. Tried out Brave, but it wouldn't even let you move tabs to the bottom or allow for vertical tabs. Immediately uninstalled that garbage. Also using qutebrowser on the side. It's only downside is that it isn't feature complete, yet. But it is good enough to handle most of my browsing just fine and is philosophically in line with what I expect from a browser.

Firefox with the new proton nonsense has become completely unusable, though, so my plan to hold out until qutebrowser is ready was thwarted. For now I disabled updates, but that's not going to cut it for very long.

Try LibreWolf, it's basically Firefox with most of the tracking bullshit removed. Think Ungoogled Chromium of Chrome. Though it still has the Proton UI.

This is a comparison of most modern (i.e. bloated) browsers: https://digdeeper.neocities.org/ghost/browsers.html

Here is a far more exhaustive table comparison that includes those more minimalist options like qutebrowser. I highly recommend reading the intro as it goes into detail what you can do to avoid web surveillance: https://tilde.club/~acz/shadow_wiki/browsers.xhtml

Personally I'm still stuck on LibreWolf (with uBlock Origin medium mode, Decentraleyes and NoScript), as I haven't decided on a decent minimalist browser. Being "feature-complete" means you're opening yourself to tons of attack vectors on your privacy. Biggest offender is Javascript.

The only thing I'm missing so far from qutebrowser is extension support. Once that and a couple of extensions are a thing, I'll likely make it my main browser.

Pale moon is slow though and doesn't handle YT well.

It depends what you are using it for. It's helpful to have a few.

Vivaldi (Chinese)
Waterfox, Slimjet, Icecat, Torr

It's a tradeoff between security and functionality
