when patients had severe cases of influenca, they were treated at home. minimal stress and minimal chance of cross-infections. nowadays, influenca symptoms get you into an icu with maximal stress and invasive therapies and crosscontamination. OF COURSE more people die in ICU if you forcefully intubate them, which can kill even a healthy person within a day.
