The type of person who, to have an opinion on something will need to be able to have a book, a page number, and paragraph to point to so as to back up their one opinion. A person who would drag down a discussion in the immediacy of needing to prove, sentence by sentence, and idea or thought.

He instead speaks to people who would read a plethora of books to gain an understanding of an idea, to be able to better grasp the whole of it, and to then spend the time to synthesize their own thoughts on the matter.

I suppose the tldr of the idea would be that there are people who can think for themselves, and tend to juggle ideas around with one another. Trading thoughts, experimenting together, and maybe coming up with something else. And there are people you should avoid who cannot think for themselves and must slavishly regurgitate other people's ideas.

Of course that isn't to say that you don't ask for proof when needed. In fact, once you and another person come to a standstill in your talk, that's when you ask for materials the other might suggest, or where they got their ideas from.
