Yesterday's harvest

Most of what I planted this year had poor yields but my tomatoes are kicking butt. This is my 3rd haul in 2 weeks and I should probably do another in a couple days. Thats about 6 lbs right there. The small orange ones are an heirloom variety called golden something or other and are sweet. The others are some kind of beefheart variety from seeds I took from the best tomato I'd ever had. All the seeds from that one germinated I ended up giving a lot of the seedlings away. Oh yeah... and they're delicious. Planted as many as I could and its paying off.

The large ones with the green shoulders look like Cherokee Purple. I have several of those in my garden, and they are absolutely delicious.

They could very well be. I got them at a farmers market in some hippy dippy town when I was on vacation a few years back. It was so good I took the seeds from a thick slice and dried for later use. Took me a couple years to get back to planting them and I am so glad I did. I've harvested about 15 lbs of just these in 2 weeks and its not letting up. I've got at least another 5 lbs+ ready to pick in a couple days and I'm loaded with greens of all sizes. I'll be gorging on these babies for the next couple months. I'm thinking of drying some too and I'll probably be making sauces with the rest.

I'll happily take some seeds off you at some point. They look magnificent, what's the taste like?

@HughBriss does a great job of describing the flavor. After he suggested they may be Cherokee Purple I checked online. I'm almost certain they are.
Maybe I'll figure a way to get some seeds to you one of these days. You might be able to find them locally though. Apparently they've become quite popular.

If nothing else they'd look magnificent in any garden, even as an ornamental.

If they're like the Cherokee Purple I have, they are rich and delicious, tangy, flavorful, juicy and lustrous, and the pure essence of what a tomato should taste like. Heirlooms are the only tomatoes one should grow because they deliver that fine, fruity character one expects from a tomato. Or to put it another way, it's the exact opposite of what a store-bought tomato is like, which is bland, dull, with texture like cardboard and rope.

After your reply I checked online about the Cherokee Purple. Almost 100% sure thats what they are. Thanks for the info. I've gone from being meh about tomatos to loving them.

You've sold me pretty hard.

Ha! Thanks for that. To borrow from Samuel Clemens, I've always thought that there's nothing so good as a home-grown tomato fresh from the vine, and nothing so terrible as the taste and texture of a manufactured, store-bought tomato. There's just no comparison. And the Cherokee Purple transcends the heirlooms.

I can appreciate this. I know how much work and patience it takes to grow your own food.

It took some work and a lot of patience but really the bulk of the work was setting up the garden beds and I did that during the lockdown last year.

Your apples are lumpy but at least you tried.

Stupendous! Those all look very fantastic!

We had so many tomatoes a few years ago that we were giving them away to neighbors and finding tomato based recipes to use more. We made the best tomato bisque soup EVER, because for some reason garden tomatoes are so delicious, and it was also a really good recipe. That consumed all the remainder we had at that time, and then suddenly there was a weird change in seasons that nobody expects in Cali, and yet still happens sometimes.

Ever since then, we've had really lousy tomato crops. This year's looking a little better, but still we've had... one tomato, so far? The chickens keep stealing all our strawberries and most of our raspberries... gotta stick the tomatoes inside the greenhouse to protect them from those little shits, probably.

Ha. Damn chickens. Yeah I've already given some to a coworker and promised some to my next door neighbor, but I'm planning on making tomato sauce to jar with the excess.

I really gotta data entry my wife's tomato bisque recipe. It was so excellent.

[ - ] Metanoid [op] 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 11, 2021 10:57:15 ago (+1/-0)

Do it man. Back on old voat someone gave a split pea and ham recipe. I seem to remember it got a lot of traction. I even cooked it up and it was great. I'm gonna need ideas for using these tomatoes cause we cant eat them fast enough. Tomato bisque sounds rightous. Make sure you tag me on the post. ( Can we even tag anymore)

Wasn't me man. I gave you an uptick. Such is life.

[ - ] HughBriss 2 points 2.7 yearsAug 10, 2021 21:36:33 ago (+2/-0)

True. I never had a conversation with a tomato. I chatter with my plants when I water my tomatoes, giving them praise for their excellent production, but not ONE has ever replied. They are indeed dumb, in the strictest sense.

Tomatoes are smarter than average leftists.

FACT!

Sounds about right.
