Is a 50lbs Recurved bow hard to draw?

submitted by Revelation21x8 to Archery 2.7 yearsAug 8, 2021 11:21:31 ago (+15/-0)     (Archery)*

Or am I just a pussy?

Bought a cheap 50lbs'er to wet my whistle. I think I should have gone lighter to practise my form before upping the weight.

Any advise Robin Hoods?

Keep practicing, 50lbs is more than enough to kill a deer, even if he’s wearing a Kevlar vest. The muscles you use to draw a bow aren’t typically that strong in the average person. I suggest exercises that focus on your upper back, get resistance bands and tie one end to something solid about nipple height, then grab the loose end and pull it back like you’re drawing your bow. Be sure to pull straight back, and that’s all you really need.

I was drawing 50lbs when I hit 16 and I didn’t “give it my all” with my training. I draw around 62-65 lbs now.

That's a great idea!

I’ll thank my dad on your behalf.

Definitely this. If you are at least hitting a the target for now, I would keep practicing with that, and before you know it, you will feel much more comfortable with it, and then actually begin to group your arrows.

I just looked up the English Longbow: https://infogalactic.com/info/English_longbow

105 lbf, imagine the fatigue.

Historical ones may have been more like 180lbs. There was an archery butt found in northern England with arrowheads still jammed inside. The archologists examining it estimated they had been shot from a bow up to 300lbs. Many adult males from that time period had curved spines because of the sheer fucking muscle on one side of their body from shooting bows all the time.

I always laugh when I see archery being the girly weapon in fantasy. Archers were monsters.

If you're just target shooting 50 is more than you need.

Technically with all things squared away a 35lb traditional will take a deer.

That's what I should have done. I think I'll get another one, "for the wife".

Something else you might consider is purchasing an adjustable compound bow. There are some affordable models that will adjust all the way from 5-70+ lbs. That way you can start at a weight that is comfortable for you and work your way up, like you would with any other exercise, and have fun doing it.

I get that it's not the same as traditional archery and what better way to build the muscles you need for archery than actual archery?

Don’t be discouraged, but also don’t give up on using it. Anthropologists are able to determine whether someone in the Middle Ages was employed as a bowman simply by looking at his skeleton. The bones of the right arm were thicker than those on the left because of the sheer strength required to operate those longbows.

I've shot a 50 pound bow before and had no trouble with it, but I work construction. If you're at least as strong as the average man it shouldn't be that hard for you. But if you're a woman or just weaker than average, it's probably difficult.

35 is light enough to learn, if you've never done it or if you aren't a lifter. (nobody has a strong back these days). 50 might be a bit high for noobs who don't lift.

You might consider strengthening your back. You could do that with a 35 lb bow.

Yeah 50 isn't easy especially to hold on full draw while lining up a shot

Keep your elbow high. Use your back muscles to draw, not your biceps.

[ - ] RecycledElectrons 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 8, 2021 17:19:59 ago (+0/-0)

It's hard to draw until you practice for years.

Harder than with a compound due to constant resistance. Used to compete with a 70lb compound, no problem. Had a recurve for fun, but it definitely took more effort and intuitive skill.

Generally, you should learn to drawn and aim simultaneously and reflexsively before immediately releasing when firing recurve. Compound has more leeway on holds.

Yes. Lift weights, and you can get there.

I have a 45# for my dominate arm, a 35# for my non-dominate arm.

50# shouldn't be too bad but you might get tired after some practice.

bent over dumbbell rows. those hit the muscles you need. and no, 50lbs is pussy weight.
