I've never been a landlord, so I won't pretend to be an expert - but don't they check for previous evictions, or ask for previous landlord contacts?

I find it surprising they wouldn't.

If I were a landlord I would do a soft credit check and background check.

A simple visual verification is all that's required to determine financial credibility....if the subject is black, brown or red they're no good, if the subject is Caucasian, without facial tattoos, red shoes and not wearing nigger pants, they're more than likely OK.
