Should I buy a sewing machine? If so which one?

I have a really shitty (almost a kids toy) sewing machine I could never figure out what I was doing wrong with it (Bobbin unravelling I think, maybe tension or something). Anyway I could keep bugging hubby to get it down from the rafters for me so I can try again or I could buy a better sewing machine.

Spotlight have good sales every few months so I have linked there but willing to buy from elsewhere (keep in mind I'm Australian so nothing with extreme shipping costs).

I have added Brother FS60X Sewing Machine ($600AUD) to my cart to keep an eye on it for sales.

I think I want auto bobbin threader, auto needle threader would be nice and auto tension setting, the auto button makers sound super handy.
Don't know much about what I am doing so as much as I would normally prefer all manual stuff computerised sounds nice if only for the troubleshooting error messages.

Any suggestions, tips or recommendations welcome!

I don't think it's a new machine you need. The bobbin tension is an easy fix; you just have to ensure you've set your machine to the appropriate stitch length for your fabric. Your manual will sort you out.

I have a very basic, cheap Brother machine that winds the bobbin for me (and it's not computerized). I got it second hand off of craigslist for around $50 USD and it still works like a charm. This is the great thing about sewing machines; they all do the same basic functions.

I checked out the Brother FS6OX. It looks good but is pricey.

Are you an experienced sewist or more of a beginner?

You're probably right. But the manual could hardly be called such and was not helpful at all. I think I bought it new for less than $100AUD (maybe $70 or $50). IIRC it wasn't winding that was an issue so much but it was a pain to get the bobbin thread up and into the needle, and then it kept coming out. Even after I sewed a couple of inches.
Maybe I needed to back sew more to secure but it usually happened so quickly and you shouldn't need heaps of back sewing to secure it.

I am very much a beginner. My mother was a very advanced sewer/seamstress and I watched her a lot on her very expensive machines and she offered to to teach me a couple of times (literally 2 very short lessons, long story short she has NPD) and the biggest issue I had was attempting to sew straight.

I just feel like a better sewing machine might be easier. I could very well be wrong. But I should probably get the one own down from the rafters first and try again, I just can't reach it myself and hubby doesn't want to.

I just want to sew a few things for myself and the kids and if I enjoy it and get good maybe even sell some stuff on etsy.

If you do get your old machine down I suggest you open it up where you can and remove as much dust as possible. And oil the machine with the proper oil at other spots. There are videos online teaching you how to do that. It's a power tool and needs care.

That being said, I only hand sew. I've sewn several times on my machine but had many frustrations when things would go wrong (user error; the machine was fine).

I discovered Bernadette Banner's channel and she inspired me to just hand sew. Hand-sewing is way more enjoyable. Yes, it's slow but you have full control all the time. I've not only sewn clothes (simple things like shell tops and skirts) but also hemmed curtains, sewn fabric napkins, and made two summer quilts for me and my hubby by hand. They were simple and only took three days on and off for each one. Good luck!

Whatever you end up getting, you should also get a singer 301 and featherweight. they are tanks and will always work.

Buy an old Pfaff 130. I have one from the 50's, the thing is an absolute beast.

My first machine cost me (I think) €250 and was honestly a little overpriced. There are similar machines available on sale for €120 now. That said, I never had any major trouble with it. In general if it starts screwing up stitches I just rethread it and sew test pieces until it decides to work again, but even fancy machines do that.

As an aside, if you and your husband prep, consider getting one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXFcmmH3foE

They cost in and around $100. They're bomb proof, they don't require electricity and they're extremely powerful. They're intended for sewing shoes and patching leather but they'll work for tailoring and dressmaking too. You can do things with them that might burn out or stress a regular domestic machine, like sewing sails or tarp.

That thing looks awesome!

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 13:00:15 ago (+0/-0)

They're really neat. Someone imported one from the US in the 1890s and the chinks haven't stopped making them since. Spare parts are also easy to source: Aliexpress is full of them. I have one alongside my domestic machine for heavier projects.

One that can make lampshades. We are going to needs lots and lots of lampshades where we are going.

I found videos on YouTube that helped me learn to make my sewing machine work.

Wow. Those machines are overpriced compared to the USA!

I bought a Singer 44s in Texas for $100 used. They are $130 on eBay.

I love my sewing machines (I have 3 now) but I would have never bought one if they were that expensive.

Get your machine down and clean and oil it. New needle works wonders too. Watch some videos on how to fiddle with the settings. Try buying pre-wound bobbins. Always start sewing by first pulling up bobbin thread and give yourself a good tail of thread. Some machines like to suck your fabric into the throatplate; for that start your sew on a scrap of fabric and transition to your item, I've heard some ladies call this a spider. Don't sew with cotton thread if you can help it, polyester is great. Sewing straight is a shitload of practice. Sometimes using a blind hem foot or quilting quarter-inch foot, which have guides, can help a TON for edge-sewing.

Yes, the sewing machine can make you sew better - the key is how well your machine is tuned. For example, no amount of cleaning will fix your sewing if your feed dogs are out.

I have a Brother NQ3600D which sews and embroiders. I bought it used and it was still a big purchase, but by that time, I decided that sewing would be my business.

Top loading bobbin is an absolute must. Auto threader is a must have. Mine has an auto cutter but using it tends to create thread-nests underneath so I never use it any more. Mine also has a bobbin winder, but I read that this puts wear on the machine so I use a separate little machine. Fancy automatic stitches are kinda fun to have but I rarely use them. If you're sewing thick fabrics, get a walking foot.

I'm self taught and watched a million videos to learn all the tips and techniques, quite a few unboxing vids on machines too, there's probably a lot on your particular machine.

Now crack the whip on hubby to get it down and sew :)

You don't want to thread a bobbin, You don't want to thread a needle, and you don't want to learn how to adjust your tension.

What you're saying is that you don't want to learn how to sew, so you think throwing $600.00 at something will make that happen.

Please never say you wonder how a handful of people got all the money in the world.

[ - ] Cunt [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 08:46:15 ago (+2/-1)

A handful of people got all the money through usery, but also automation. By extension of your logic everyone who doesn't want to hand sew doesn't want to sew. Everyone who doesn't want to hand wash all their clothes don't want clean clothes.

I didn't say I don't want to learn those things, but if technology has sufficiently advanced to where I don't have to, I'd rather not do them, and focus on putting a project together.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 09:26:41 ago (+0/-0)

SVP Worldwide owns Singer, Pfaff and Viking.

Any new sewing machine you buy is going to have plastic gears which are guaranteed to break. If it has a circuit board that will break first, and it won't be worth repairing. It goes in the recycling bin and and ends up on a barge to Indonesia or someplace where it's ends up in the ocean because nobody wants trash.

You could get a next to free sewing all metal old machine that sews much, much better than any new one and it could be a hundred years old because they never die. But you'd have to thread your own needle and control the tension so your sewing would look better that the crap put out by plastic machines that don't even allow the user to make the proper tension.

Sewing has nothing to do with technology. It's about the person doing the sewing.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 13:04:08 ago (+0/-0)

What you're saying is that you don't want to learn how to sew, so you think throwing $600.00 at something will make that happen.

Honestly I can see her concern: Back when I was learning to solder I bought a cheap €20 iron and ran into all kinds of problems. I didn't know it at the time, but the issue was that it was very low powered and it would solder the first two joints fine, then it'd cool down and stop working until I gave it time to recover.

I got pissed off and bought a higher quality iron with a nice stand and digital temperature control for €60 and it worked perfectly, I've used it on dozens of projects since and it's never failed me.

Sometimes a cheap tool is perfectly good for the job and your just need to git gud. Other times it's a curse that wastes your time and holds you back from learning how to do the task and completing projects. The only way to find out is trial and error or asking people who've done it before.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 17:25:48 ago (+0/-0)*

No. Soldering isn't sewing. If anything, the more gadgets and more modern you get, the worse the sewer does. It's an impediment.

Cunt thinks old singers are junk, and sounds lie the chinese who think antiques are dirty. IF she can't sew on one of those, then it's hopeless.

The topic of sewing doen'st appear to be anything you're informed about. If the user can't control the tension, as a lot of plastic consumer machines don't allow for, the stitches produced are absolute garbage by 6 months in.

"but it was a pain to get the bobbin thread up and into the needle, and then it kept coming out. Even after I sewed a couple of inches." That's her, not the machine.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 19:05:12 ago (+0/-0)

Old singers can be hit and miss. If they're well maintained and in good working order they'll last generations. If not... good luck scrambling for parts and trying to work out what's wrong. Assessing the difference between the two isn't a beginner's task.

Well... I've been sewing for around 20 years, but I'm sure I have a lot to learn. Not sure why I'd thread the bobbin thread into the needle, normally the needle just picks it up on a lockstitch machine.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 20:25:08 ago (+0/-0)

Why would anyone buy a sewing machine that doesn't work? If it works it has all its parts. There is nothing simpler. If you've been sewing for twenty years then you should know that.

They've worked for over a hundred years because they are simple, and that simplicity and control produces the best stitch.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 20:34:40 ago (+0/-0)

Because a beginner is not in a position to know what good working order looks like. They can't tell if they're fucking up or the machine is, hence the value in getting something new and high quality.

Look, I can see you have a strong opinion on this, good for you, but there are valid reasons why a newbie would ask the questions cunt did. Peace.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 22:22:53 ago (+0/-0)

The valid reason is being brainwashed by consumerism. SVP worldwide, that owns singer, pfaff and viking are owned by Ares management. Ares management is an oligarch investment company involved in credit, private equity and real estate. They are Antony Ressler, Michael Arougheti, David Kaplan, John H. Kissick, and Bennett Rosenthal.

The progressive oligarch tyrants were created by cunts who think they can buy anything they want, including learning.

i am talking about regular sewing machines that have the added feature of being able to do embroidery.

[ - ] Cunt [op] 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 09:14:59 ago (+0/-0)

I know, they are cool, you can just upload an image and it embroiders it automatically. I'm sure the chinks don't have an issue selling them. It's like $3 for custom iron on embroidery patches on Aliexpress, but you could probably get some polo shirts with it embroidered directly on for cheap from there too.

why would i give my money to a hostile enemy nation???

[ - ] Cunt [op] 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 10:54:51 ago (+0/-0)

Are you an American? Do you pay tax? If you answered yes to both of these questions; congratulations you already are helping to give billions to an enemy nation worse than china.

[ - ] Artificial_Intelligentile 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 11:49:52 ago (+0/-0)

yeah, no escaping the (((international traders and bankers)))... unless... i buy my meat and veggies from the farmers surrounding me, my shoes are produced in my country from leather produced in my country (in my region, even) even my bicycle was made in my country (though it costs twice as much as a chinese import) so yeah, i feel quite confident that the white race profits from my consumerism, not just some faceless jewish shitcunt.

and taxes are mandatory, i cant do anything about it but vote as rightwing as possible, which i do.

how about this slogan:

how many niggers do we have to kill so that europe isnt considered a safe haven anymore?

I'll send you a pic of an old sewing machine my missus has that she doesn't use. Might be useful until you get a better one? She may want to sell it? I'll send you a pic in any event. Bloody heavy thing in a small box.

E: just talked to the missus. She said it was a collector's item and really old fashioned with a bobbin and no one would want it but she'd take $50 for it. I'd imagine postage would be a lot though as its heavy.

[ - ] Cunt [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 29, 2021 09:22:22 ago (+1/-0)

I think you got the wrong dude as I don't own a whipper snipper and wouldn't know the first thing about them. Bought a Victa battery-operated pole pruner not long ago. On Voat1 were you sort of operating as a boy?

[ - ] Cunt [op] 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 30, 2021 02:31:23 ago (+0/-0)

It was definitely you but you might have had a mower as I was tossing up the whippy or the mower but mainly looking for brands as the batteries cross over machines (went with the Victa whippy).

I was openly female but with a confusing name to some.

goddamn now I am intrigued as I am reputed to have a phenomenal memory (trying not to boast) which is why law enforcement hires me. This is embarrassing. And as a creep I apparently should remember girls as you've noted. I'll think about it. My parents weren't bastards but my mum was a reluctant mother. Borderline useless. Wanted to explore her artistic ability rather than cook breakfast for her kids as they got ready for school.
