Started the wife on her own 22lr handgun before moving to my .380 ACP. She hasn't fired the 9mm or shotgun yet, but she's not afraid of guns and does enjoy shooting.
I've taught a few people to shoot. All of what was in the article is basic common sense. Probably the best time I had of it though was a 15 year old. I lined the different types of guns I had that I wanted to bring from softest recoil (22) to biggest kick (357 ex-police pistol). Loaded each up fully. Explained safety, stance, how to line up the sights, and everything else mentioned. Started with the 22. That was kind of fun. He wanted to shoot that a few more times. Cool, yo. Move on up to the 25 automatic pistol. Explained the difference and how it will have a sharper kick, be louder, have some spark, and generally just feel more raw and be more difficult to aim. Next up was the 45 colt, single action. Then the 357. I made sure he understood that it really kicked. I can shoot that thing for 45 minutes straight and walk away sore. One shot was all it took for him to gently place the gun down, walk off a bit with his jaw open and then come back begging for the rest of the rounds. Then he went back to the 22 and stuck with that.
It's all about their comfort. They are, after all, holding an object who's sole original purpose was to kill. And a lot of people can't get past that. I can't blame them, honestly. Do I want to kill anyone? Hell no I don't. Would I have nightmares if I had to? Very likely. It's not an easy thing to get past.
For the most part my wife stays home with the kids. She’s shot a few guns with her dad while hunting as a kid but that’s about it. She knows where the shotgun is and to point the dangerous end on any intruder. Most of the protection is up to me though.

"Women can be easier to teach than men because they tend to listen and they often don’t have bad habits to unlearn. "
LOL
Women really think this... ridiculous. Women listen and don't have bad habits.. haha yeah right.
