Bit of a "saved you a click": if you live in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, or Washington you can't have them shipped there. Just ship it to a friend or relative or whatever in a neighboring state not on that list if you really want it. I guess Hawaii is the most fucked.

Not that I would buy a pre-built machine. I always build my own. The first PC my family ever got was filled with off-brand/clone hardware, Windows 95 pre-installed, and they included NO DRIVERS (the drivers were installed on Win95 but they provided no 3.5" floppies with the driver installation files on them). So after I was fucking around learning Windows 95, I had a hell of a time getting sound again because I had no sound drivers, and no internet. Put a lot of pressure on myself because I was the one (only in my early teens) to get the PC and I fucked it up. Since then I always build my own machine so I know exactly what is in it!

The only ready-to-go machine I would buy would be a laptop, and it would probably be used! Computers really haven't been improving by leaps and bounds like they were a few decades ago.

If you live in one of those states, my advice: MOVE

‘High end Dell’ is an oxymoron

I've been saying this for a while now: The next step is energy rationing.

Once they have energy rationing normalised they'll start doing it along social justice lines. If you have a high social credit score, you signal the right signals, vaxx on demand and you have the right skin colour, you can run the microwave and the fridge at the same time.

If not... I suspect hand tools are going to get a whole lot more important.

Also, expect all off-grid setups to be required to connect to the grid, which will then also be metered. No independence allowed. They claimed ownership of rainwater and they forced the amish to use their plumbing system, they can absolutely force you into a socialised electricity supply and claim ownership of your electrons.

Thats not even high end, an i5 and 1650ti is as mid-range as it gets a ps5 probably uses more power, it shouldn't even need more than 450w PSU.

very disturbing

As someone who loves old Xeon based workstations this is annoying. I wonder if it applies to used eBay gear?

Maybe, but the main point of this has nothing to do with PC prices. It's the beginning of making energy usage a reward for pro-globalist behaviour and lack of energy a punishment.

There's bound to be religious exemptions for jews and muslims. Basically jizyah.

So?

[ - ] Broc_Liath 2 points 3.9 yearsJul 27, 2021 19:35:26 ago (+2/-0)

So they're gradually tightening the noose on energy usage. Today you're laughing at californians for getting cut off because they left their fridge open.

Tomorrow you're wondering if you can afford to meme because one more social credit strike and you're going to have to choose between being able to cook dinner and being able to access the internet.

Yeah. You can’t stop it. It’s going to happen. It’s been foretold.

I wonder what they would think of us that use fast GPUs just to render fractals for days on end?

[ - ] knije_tahou 0 points 3.9 yearsJul 27, 2021 15:31:22 ago (+0/-0)

I prohibit myself from buying that shit.

The fast computers can go to the kids in the other states, there is no advantage to having the best, fastest, top end equipment.

If you live in the aforementioned commie states, you can still order any power supply you want. Just order the PC parts and get your 1500watt powersupply or whatever the fuck you wanted and enjoy. If you really want to save power, you can always shut it down when away working or sleeping don't use it for crypto mining (old school blockchain tech, the good ones don't require any fucking mining), mining will tax the gpu, and lower its lifespan all day while also chewing through electricity. This is all assuming they're actually monitoring power consumption in the first place.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 1 point 3.9 yearsJul 27, 2021 19:38:55 ago (+1/-0)

They do these things gradually. They did it with water starting in the 80s. First it was just protecting the great lakes and coasts, then it was rivers, then it was anything that drained into a national park, then it was goldfish ponds in your back garden, now you need a permit to collect rainwater off your roof.

It's the same with electricity. Today it's slightly harder to order a bigger computer, tomorrow if they decide your son's tweet contained misinformation you'll have to rush to cook food for a few days to cover the impending blackout.

Jamal and Karen won't need to worry of course, you can subsidise their bill for them.

[ - ] AndrewBlazeIt 0 points 3.9 yearsJul 27, 2021 13:42:50 ago (+0/-0)

They coulda just banned chink and pajeet crypto mining, but whatever.

My CPU and GPU are both in powersave mode most of the time anyway - if they’re tracking power consumption, I probably use less than most people with shitty pre-builts
