In the US most ISPs have a pseudo monopoly. Though the neighboring district to your north or south with have a different ISP offer for phone and a different ISP for cable, they will only have one of each, just like you. It is the same all over the US. And the DSL and Cable services will be similarly overpriced for substandard service. So although none of them have a monopoly over the whole of the nation, each has a local monopoly. You go through them, their "competition" or go fuck yourself.

Americans have become so complacent, you have failed to watch the telecoms skirt antitrust laws by subdistricting, then lobbying regulation so as to prevent any competition from showing up.

Here in France, I have a choice of between 10 and 20 providers, have Phone with free international calling + Fiber Optic internet at 5 Mbps and a bunch of services I don't use like Digital TV and whatnot for about 40-45 USD.

France has out capitalismed the US, at least in telecoms.

Most cellular data plans have data caps. Whereas landlines usually do not. Satellite internet also has data caps which is why I'd take a slow DSL over a highspeed satellite connection any day. I just download all day and night sometimes.

As far as cable modems, there is only one cable and one cable company. So no competition like gabara said. Do you have Comcast or what?

I switched to a skyroam solis about a year, maybe year and a half ago. It uses cell coverage to give you a wife hotspot for 40 bucks a month. It’s all I need and I play games on it when the mood strikes.

If you have any competition in your area and comcast is fucking your bill, follow these steps.

I perform this once every 12 months and it always works for the last 9 consecutive years.

1. Notice your bill is too high or has recently increased.
2. Call comcast and go through menus to "cancel all services"
3. They will never cancel automatically, you will be forwarded to a "retention expert"
4. Retention expert will approach you with a lowball offer, like "how about free HBO to keep your business?" Tell them no, obviously.
5. Let retention expert know that better priced competition in the area has made continuing service with comcast meaningless. Use a real competitors name, they will check it exists, but they have no idea if they service your street or not, so dont stress that. Quote the competitor as being half the price for the same speed.
6. They will hem and haw and come at you with a "special offer" this will put their price near the competitors for the similar package. This special offer usually expires in 12 months and you will need to repeat the steps again.

For example. My 300mb/sec connection cost $140 a month, I don't have television channels activated because fuck television. I used the steps to explain fiber is 60 a month for same speed. My bill is now $55 a month for cable. Cheaper than any cell phone plan for 300mb/sec bandwidth.

You have to have a real competitor that exists and then you can just quote any fucking deal they have and bring your current ISP down to their level without needing to switch. They always buckle.

Don't be a shithead while you go through the steps, be polite and know whats coming.
