The name Manzanita, little apple" in Spanish, is after the small fruit they bear.

Evidently, they preserve well. As I write this I'm looking at about a half-pound of them that I harvested years ago sealed in a glass container.

My buddy says you can make syrup out of them and that it's quite good. I'll have to get around to doing that some day.

Crushed and boiled, the leafs can help cure poison ivy rashes. This works if you are allergic to calamine lotion. Boil to thicken a bit and then add to skin when hot as you can stand, like a hot bath. Apply again when it gets too itchy.
