They compete with government today. NASA's successes represented the success of a government. What they don't realize because they're psychopaths is that the success of a government depends on the support of the people. They've been making every single political decision for so long now they just want to be acknowledged as the government in some sly way.
They have too big of an ego to understand that Americans didn't pray and hope for their astronauts to blow up like they do these douche bags.
Space is the ultimate goal for their culture (outward-gazing, conceptually linear, believes progress=technology). As an empty, infintely unexplored wilderness, "space" is the best possible canvas to play out those beliefs.
Also they're men riding around in long exploding metal tubes, shooting themseleves into a vast emptiness. The sexual symbolism is hard to miss. I bet that one guy backed out becuase Branson wouldn't stop jizzing his pants on the way up.
Cataclysm is a reoccurring feature of this earth. Civilisations past have recorded it over and over. Told stories, carved rock. Ruins of times past are uncovered and over and over show signs of various cataclysmic events.
The ultra rich buy into monumental bunkers and space. They know what futures await us and hope to be prepared.
