Welcome to v/Sewing

submitted by Cynabuns to Sewing 2.8 yearsJul 16, 2021 00:02:29 ago (+49/-0)     (Sewing)

New sub for all things sewing, from crafts to quilts to tents to clothing. Come share your sewing knowledge or link a cool pattern or video. Questions are great too. I'm self taught, only sewing for a few years now, so I'm always looking for better, smarter, or even old time ways to get the job done. I love making something from nothing, totally rewarding and satisfying to the soul, I should have kicked that sewing machine's ass sooner.

Running with scissors is totally allowed here.

Hello, my dear! Nice to see you! It was great working with you back on v/reportspammers. Good to see it's not such a big problem here. :)

We're still tiny and unknown, give it time.

Great! I love to sew. I sewed by hand most of my life and then got a sewing machine about ten or twelve years ago and that was a real game changer.

I am pretty good at tailoring clothes - I often will get stuff at the thrift store that mostly fits and finish the job when I get home. I'm not very good at sewing from scratch though... People who can just follow a pattern and make a professional looking piece are something else!

No kidding! Whole new level of respect right there. I've only done a few clothing items from scratch but I want to do more. Not long ago I tailored a man's vest taking it down a size and making it fitted, I was giddy when it turned out great and the client was pleased. Clothing scares me lol but I'm committed to kicking its ass too.

I see a ton of videos on people making gear. Give it a go! Make a small version you see what's involved sewing-wise... and the costs. A friend asked me to sew a custom lunch box for her son and while I could have done it, the materials alone beat out the price of a new one from Walmart at ten bucks.

Cool! I am hoping to start making my own clothes this winter!

This is related to sewing a bit and it's really interesting. As a kid I tied my shoes in the standard diagonal way:

https://blog.samuel-windsor.co.uk/shoelaces-guide-for-gentlemen

but somewhere along the line I was influenced to switch to an apparently cooler style:

https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/lace-oxfords-dress-shoes/

and the other day as I was struggling to get my shoes off as I always do I had a lightbulb moment [insert lightbulb]...I changed my lacing style back to the one I used as a kid and bingo [insert another lightbulb] my shoes came off much easier. I danced a jig in my carport! [I didn't really]. So beat that light-bulb moment. You can't 'cos you lead a boring life!

bros, bros, don't fall for it. The "Sewing Club" is an FBI front. You'll be there sewing away as New Age Sensitive Guys do but behind a two-way mirror will be sitting three dudes from the Bureau listening in to your gossipy chatter. Ever see the film the Dancer Upstairs? Same principle.I'm sorry.

I had a brilliant idea! Since you all like sewing and making stuff from material, why don't you [watch the downvotes flood in] make ... masks to protect from the Covid!

[ - ] Cynabuns [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 16, 2021 20:34:33 ago (+1/-0)

Been there, done that ;)

My doc mentioned last year it was hard for some of her older sicker patients to find masks and she asked me to make a few. So I did. And then more and more. I made a ton and donated a ton to nurses and fire fighter/paramedics, really to anyone who felt like they needed one.

I begrudge no one when it comes to wearing a mask. The older folks, chemo patients, and the otherwise sick should have been the only ones who needed them (but we know the rest of that story).

I felt blessed not to need one and blessed that I picked up sewing when I did so that I could make as many as I did. It was an honorable mission making them.

Welcome back Needles. I'm doing that admin thing again here... in between sewing and cooking projects (v/Recipes) ;)

Have you ever relined a coat? I have a nice leather that the lining is just toast.

I probably need to get a pro involved or I'll fuck up my jacket.

[ - ] Cynabuns [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 16, 2021 10:31:17 ago (+1/-0)*

I have not, but I did tailor a man's vest and it came out great. If the lining is toast, you might as well grab a seam ripper and see what's inside. There's probably a video on how to do it. Worse thing that happens is that you've saved your tailor a step.

If you don't sew something with NIGGER on it, I will be very cross indeed.

[ - ] paul_neri 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 16, 2021 06:20:45 ago (+1/-0)
