submitted by Baneofretail to whatever 2.8 yearsJul 14, 2021 10:03:54 ago (+25/-0)     (whatever)

Howdy, so we're everyone here talks about keeping the government out of our children's lives. My wife and I are actually doing it. If there's anyone here who has experience with any particular homeschooling curriculum, and has any other tips for teaching in a smaller space, it would be appreciated.

You don't have to be a Libertarian for this (I'm not). The stuff is great and they get your kid prepped to finish college at the same time as high school without all of the indoctrination. My kid loves it and they are taught to be self reliant while doing it. there is a wealth of resources if they have questions about anything including blogs and direct contact with the teachers.

I recommend you adapt Trivium to your needs. It is the methodology and pedagogy model used by ancient Greeks, Romans, and US Founding Fathers. It is effective at teaching children how to learn, rather than what to learn. It can be taught by most anyone and doesn't require the pretentiousness of a so-called "teaching certificate," which are usually handed out to the most mediocre college students.

The Trivium model is good for teaching ethics, rhetoric, logic, language, grammer, writing, and arithmatic. As our kids got older, we integrated the chemistry, physics, math, and biology curriculums of the pre-moon landing generation (circa 1945-1965).

You should get your kid in music lessons with local music teachers; art with local art teachers; juijitsu with the local jujitsu teacher; and other extra curricular from people who specialize in those activities. This also helps your kids socialize around people with common interests and values, so they can build more meaningful and deeper friendships.

Local homeschool groups can vary from creepy religious nuts to genius freedom loving entrepreneurs, so pick the groups you join carefully and don't be afraid to start your own that reflects the core values you wish to share.

The book that I have used to learn about the Trivium is "The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home” by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. It explains the trivium, as well as how to implement it in the homeschool setting, and it includes curriculum recommendations, which are organized by subject and grade. In addition to the book, they also have a website and their own line of curriculum. We have used some of their products, but have gotten curriculum that works with the trivium from other sources are well. You can get more information about what is covered in the book and the curriculum they sell at www.welltrainedmind.com.

One of the curriculum publishers that we are fond of, that also follows the classical/trivium model, is Classical Academic Press. Their website provides some additional information about the trivium and the classical approach. The website is www.classicalacademicpress.com, and it includes more information about the curriculum they have developed. We love their materials because they are fun and engaging, as well as thorough and challenging. We have used their materials for writing, grammar, latin, and logic.

Another publishing company that is known for their materials, that follow the trivium, is Memorial Press, www.memoriapress.com. They provide an explanation of the trivium, as well as a large variety of curriculum. Our experience with the Memorial Press curriculum we have tried is that it is dry and not as engaging. Both of our older kids tried multiple subjects through Memoria Press, but it did not keep their attention. The website is a good source of information about classical education. In addition, they send out a quarterly catalog and magazine that includes information and interesting articles related to the trivium and classical education.

I don’t know if it’s still around but friends of ours growing up did the Calvert homeschool method. I went to nice private schools and these girls were way beyond me. They scored 1600 on the SAT in 7th grade.

Get out and do a lot of excursions. Teach your child how to learn and research and offer different subjects. Do not try and replicate school in your home.join a group and do a lot of socialisation.
