Nvidia makes proprietary drivers because the driver is part of the product for them. They have simplified sales model where they sell the hardware and let you download the driver (from them) for free, but the driver is not free on a number of levels. Nvidia dedicates loads of resources to developing it, and it contains proprietary techniques they do not want to give away to competitors. Another thing is that the primary difference between workstation class cards and gamer cards is the drivers. However, they charge more for the workstation cards, and they just enforce that by making the workstation drivers only run on the workstation models.

To an extent, this is not an excuse for not properly documenting their hardware, however I think the reasons for not doing that are much the same. It would require a lot of resources to do it right, without much extra profit incentive. At the same time, they'd probably end up leaking their special sauce in the process.

I built my pc in 2008, I still use it just fine. Plays high end games on high settings too. Only thing I had to do recently was update the bios. As long as the graphics card is good the computer will run games fine.
