There's always a reason for their behavior; it could be something that you're talking about, it could be something else. For now, all we're doing is applying human perception to something that we don't know completely how to understand, in this case, the animal brain. Some say that animals have souls, other deny this, mainly to assuage their own guilt if they later get proven wrong. Or it could be that everyone is wrong.

TL:DR my point is that we don't know, and sometimes, that's much more of a better answer than we think.

Many years ago my sister's cat died. Right as we got done burying him, my cat started wrestling / playing with an unseen force right there next to us. It was a lot like this video and we wondered if she could see him.
