They were, like everyone at the time and pretty much everyone today.

But they were racist by today's standards.

Only thing is, so was everyone else on the planet, especially those who are proclaimed to be the "victims of racism," today.

Singling people out for performing the same natural, instinctual behavior that everyone performed at that point in time is the part that modern consumers of media aren't understanding. This is because most of them have been bombarded with a false narrative for so long, they can't even grasp simple concepts any longer. They project presentist values on to the past with no understanding of the drastic differences between life in the two separate eras.
