It basically describes the werewolf legends, the yeti legends, the sasquatch legends, the bugbear legends, the ogre legends, and pretty much every "be very very scared of the dark" story in history across every culture, continent and people.

Let me make my point a little finer: Neanderthals were humans. They weren't "human-like". They weren't subhuman. We have so little understanding of what the Neanderthals were like, that garbage articles like this one, filled with conjecture, supposition, and mostly asspull fantastic nonsense, flourish because of the absence of solid information. But for some reason, based on almost no information, what little we have is re-imagined and interpreted in the stupidest and most ridiculous ways, especially when delusions "cultural anthropologists" try to ascribe behavior and cultural traits. It can't be done. They just need to admit they don't know what they're talking about. Just as bad are the bone diggers and the masters of caliper, the "physical anthropologists", who also, with nearly no information, try to "reconstruct" what they think the average Neanderthal looked like. Much of that, again, is just conjecture, which is heavily influence not on anything scientific but on the preferences and biases and cultural ideas of the anthropologist.

As soon as any real science comes into play in this discussion, I'll entertain it. But for now, all of this is about as scientific as The Book of Mormon.
