He left it way way too late. Unless that was the Limpopo a sinking vessel of that displacement is not something I would want to be anywhere near. As a rule you should be at least the length of the vessel away.
Yeah, that was definitely a wide load. That's probably why it wasn't as bad for him. The displacement of water was more spread out. More surface area because of the width of the boat versus a vertically tall boat.
