Better Project64 Settings

submitted by Bludvarg to oneangrygamer 2.9 yearsJun 28, 2021 22:41:00 ago (+5/-0)     (oneangrygamer)*

While we're waiting on the Element problem to be fixed, I decided to finally do something about the subpar settings I was using in Project64. (I MIGHT even actually get around to finishing Castlevania 64 like I've been meaning to).

I had been using the default Jabo plugins, which work well enough for most games, if not perfectly, but I was getting all sorts of shitty-looking textures and audio pops.

Turns out what I needed to do was download the Glide64 graphics plugin (the setup of which uses a wrapper file, so that took a little troubleshooting too) and the Shunyuan's HLE Audio pack plugin for sound. Both work really well (here's the fixed HUD https://files.catbox.moe/tdfplj.png), though the main menu of Castlevania 64, which uses a kind of magnifying glass-styled look, doesn't load right (https://files.catbox.moe/wyysp4.png). However, the exact same type of menu (Options from the in-game pause menu) works as intended. Not too big a deal, but something that should be noted. As far as the audio goes, I didn't test too much, but the audio pops seem to be completely gone.

As I understand it, this graphics plugin also apparently supports hi-res imported textures, so I'm wanting to test out Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness for that.

(Oh good, it did work. That last version of Voat wouldn't let you post a new topic if you were brand new.)

Oh yeah, I completely forgot that's how this system works...I feel like a dumbass. Thanks for reminding me.

Since I was having trouble getting to sleep, I decided to go ahead and start Carrie's story. I'm going through the game WAY faster now, I think mostly because it's all been familiar areas. However, I stopped right at the first unique area for Carrie because I think I can finally get to bed. Considering how fast I got up to almost the middle of the game (I'm like two levels shy, but this feels like a good stopping point), I can probably blast through the rest of it tomorrow, or at least sometime in the near future--I'm definitely not letting it sit a year again.

Anyway--skeletons on motorcycles (who cares if they weren't invented yet? Dracula magic) https://files.catbox.moe/aej8fz.png

This is what the rose garden looks like with this plugin https://files.catbox.moe/rg5m01.png MUCH BETTER than the default Jabo option

Never used the Glide wrapper for PJ64, but I have noticed severe input lag/latency when using it with various retro PC titles. That makes me wary of it for this use case.

Then again, my actual cartridge library is pretty solid and I don't use emulators much.

I had a small amount of lag in the Tower of Execution (the tiniest amount of slowdown around the central tower structure, but not enough to impact gameplay), but that was it. I'll have to try it with other games to see if there are other problems with it.

I'll still have to play through Carrie's story before I consider this game completely done, but I don't think that will be too much of a problem. Most of the game is shared levels and I know how to get past the mandragora/nitro puzzle that gives so many people problems (it's really not that hard, certainly not as bad as AVGN lets on). I could do it in Legacy of Darkness, and I do intend to go through that game as well, but I'd rather have this particular set of save files completed first (yes, including both second costumes. I've already gotten one. https://files.catbox.moe/j5m0we.png )

I already mentioned a few days ago that the next N64-era game I'll be doing is Megaman 64, but Mystical Ninja Goemon has also caught my eye. I know that series is pretty long-running, but I've never even tried it. Oh, and remember that line about trannies in that fan translation of Goemon 3 (https://media.nichegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/27075535/Goemon-3-01-27-2020-3.jpg), the one that got SJWs all upset? Turns out there's a similar situation in the N64 game, also in relation to okama. The US version just uses the much more tame "weirdos" (https://legendsoflocalization.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/goemon-okama-weirdo-thumbnail.jpg), but I understand the Japanese version outright calls them fags.

Alright, got Special2 for Reinhardt's second costume.
No Renon fight (I thought I'd spent enough, but fine, maybe next time around).
No Charlie Vincent fight (oh good, I thought I was going through pretty fast).
Gilles de Rais (False Dracula) was a pretty decent boss fight. The difficulty came mainly from the small size of the room than anything else.

Aaaaand YES, True Dracula! I was hoping I did this all right. Glad to see it paid off.

True Dracula 1 was basically False Dracula on top of a tower instead of in a room, and more aggressive. Not bad at all.
True Dracula 2, the big fuckoff monster form (https://files.catbox.moe/5kv7yd.png), is really hard if you keep your distance, but super easy if you get right in there and whip the shit out of him (https://files.catbox.moe/gt1wcg.png).

And now I've beaten Castlevania 64 (or half of it, at least) for the first time. Yes, it's got that 1990s early 3D jank to it, ESPECIALLY in regards to the platforming with both fall damage and very often over instant death pits, and the camera can be a bit frustrating. But overall, I would say that Castlevania 64's poor reputation is ill-deserved. It's well worth playing, although you should probably either use a modernized gamepad for the original hardware or emulate it and use something like an Xbone controller.

I've been playing through the rest of the game for the past hour or two and I just beat Death...who was super fucking easy. This is an end-game boss, and one that's typically second only to Dracula himself. I'm going to assume it's because I had the fully powered Vampire Killer at the time, but maybe the fight itself isn't that hard? I mean, most of the challenge of this game comes from the very early 3D platforming and momentum control, and there were just two tower stages right before this, but still...goddamn.

I now officially have only one regular level left in the Clock Tower. I'm not sure how much gold I've spent for the Renon fight to be active or how long I took for the Charlie Vincent fight to be available, or if I did everything right to fight Malus as True Dracula, but I guess I'll see within the next hour or so.

Ok, I just heard this and had to say something.

"The first time I picked up an NES controller, I thought it was the most obtuse thing ever. I had no idea what to do."

I...whaaaa? What kind of stupid nigger can't pick up on one of the most intuitive pieces of technology on the goddamn planet? It's four fucking buttons and a movement pad; it's not fucking rocket science.
