Came across this guy on a recent hike. It's a Western Diamondback rattlesnake so I let him take his time.

You learn to keep watch during the spring and summer and always keep your dog on a leash.

It's pretty rare that people die from rattlesnake bites. Don't get me wrong, it'll hurt like a motherfucker but unless you're bitten on the neck you've got more than a day to get to the hospital.

Yeah, but it's easily identified so there's no question when you get to the emergency room. Coral snakes have deadlier venom, but they're not vipers like rattlesnakes so it's less likely to suffer a fatal strike.

Im most worried about cottonmouths. Rattlesnakes usually get culled by the rat snakes here.

Buddy got bitten by a small one at night.Drove him to hospital. His leg swelled up like crazy but he came home after a full day in the hospital. I’ve heard the babies pack a worse bite but don’t know if that’s just a myth.

It's not a myth. The younger ones haven't learned how much venom they need to use, so they basically mag dump. It isn't uncommon for an adult rattlesnake to "dry bite" a potential threat. That's when the don't inject any venom at all. As they get older they tend to conserve their venom and only use what they need to get the job done. They don't waste it on things they can't eat.

Only ever seen 'em that big in Iowa once.
Not supposed to get that big up here, but there it was, sprawled across the trail just like your boy, there.

I always remember reading as a kid about how the Wester Diamondback was the largest rattle snake (and most poisonous rattle snake?). Pretty sweet.

They can get up to 6 feet and weight 12 lbs or so. They aren't the most venomous but you can lose a limb due to necrosis. Fortunately we have anti-venom in most of the hospitals, especially during the summer.

did you play a game with that snake? (a game where you put apples on the floor and the snake must eat them, becoming longer with each apple. but if it bites itself, it loses.)

Nope, it would never have occurred to me to do that. Even if it had, I still wouldn't.
