One is the "mirror test" which is pass or fail based on the subject responding or ignoring a mark on their body which can only be seen with help from the mirror.
The other is freezing vs. self greeting behavior, which isn't discussed in great detail but seems to be a prerequisite for the mirror test since it seems plausible that a subject could exhibit greeting behavior without responding to the mark on their body but could not also freeze and respond.
The lower latitude children failed both.
My daughter had no response until 6 months, when she began to exhibit a freezing behavior where she would just stare at herself. Then at 8.5 months she began greeting herself. I have not tried the mark test. There appears to be a progression though, from freezing to greeting, and then perhaps to the mark response.
It is possible that the lower latitude children are not typically exposed to mirrors in home life and are simply going through developmental steps later because stimuli are introduced later. Future experiments should control for this.
