Take something for the ADHD and pretend that you're having a good time. You can't ask for much more if the boy is having the time of his life and being a good kid.

You missed the point. Stop being a man-child.

You can't ask for much more if the boy is having the time of his life and being a good kid.

OK.

Weed is made for fishing.

Was going to say the same thing. Enjoy the weather, nature, and time with son. Son can be stoked about fishing, OP can be in a proper mindset to enjoy the big picture.

[ - ] PuttitoutIsGone 5 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 14:36:10 ago (+5/-0)

No lie. I fish a lot and there is nothing better than sitting out there enjoying nature in that mindset. And that feeling lasts all week long...

Jeremy Clarkson (motoring journo) once wrote that most englishmen turn to fishing to escape their axe-faced wives and horrible children (or something like that).

Brings to mind the saying: "most men lead lives of quiet desperation".

Look into a boat rental or a friend with a jon boat. Fishing can be very boring, to some that is the allure. Ask your son what he finds exciting about it. Get specific. He may like the surprise of pulling a live animal out of the water. You might find a compromise in bowhunting.

Also, fishing can be incredibly complex; there are different rods, baits, riggings, and techniques based on the type of fish you are after. Are you freshwater or saltwater? Lakes or streams? You might find a way to get excited by getting into the details. There is a lot of science, but art has its place as well.

We always went in the afternoon with blazing sun....

Worst time, comrade. You have to wake up like 5am and start fishing from 5:30am till 9am. It depends on a fish though, but in general midday is a no-no.

I'm in opposite camp tho. My father would fish every day, if he could. Gets on a boat at 5am and whole morning on a lake. Then goes out again at evening. Traps, lures, baits, all nine yards.

This is the best answer.

I find fishing extremely boring as well. My best friend, who I see maybe 1x a year, maybe 1x every 2 years, absolutely loves everything about it.

I'd rather sit next to him, talking, asking him questions, catching up, just being together for 5-6 hours on a little boat tossing a stupid line into the water every minute or so and then reeling it back in than not see him at all.

I do things like count how many times I turn the spinner when reeling it back in to keep my mind off the boredom. Counting keeps your mind focused and not show your boredom so easy. Or, maybe try counting seconds and see how slow you can reel it back in. I will also check out houses, or other boats, or trees along the bank. If you are into physical skills, you can try to pick a specific spot in the water, and try to cast perfectly into that spot. Again, it gives your mind something to achieve - did you hit that spot perfectly? Were you off by two feet? Two yards? Thirty yards? Again, If the goal is to not show your boredom, this is a good technique I use as well.

If given the option, I would prefer most anything over anything fishing-related. But I do this every time we are together, because it's what he likes to do.

Fishing is not a guaranteed result. Many make it a deliberate challenge.

It is morally criminal to fish during spawning season (now), but....

It depends if going for a big pile of little sunfish (productive) or trying to land elusive game fish for experts :

- Large Mouth Bass (one in 5 trips without high tech recon gear)

- Freshwater land-locked salmon called "Trout" trapped for thousands of years inland. Trout is stocked across all of amercas streams, sometimes by Eagles. (one in 3 trips without having a secret spot on a good stream)

- Big Northern Pike ! Catch one of those and impress every neighbor visiting your kitchen.

Wow! look at the huge smiles! :

https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffsb&q=Big+Northern+Pike&iax=images&ia=images

Pike is not easy :

use a Rapala CD 11 Countdown plug, which falls at a rate of one foot per second, giving you depth and precision at the same time.

You can use a 6 ½-foot baitcasting rod and 14-pound-test monofilament line for this fishing and have no problem landing big pike with simple rig and technique.

Chance of getting a big pike? One in three fishing trips.

CATFISH ? CATFISH are caught accidentally, unless noodling using your fingers as bait. Just buy "Swai" at walmart if you want to eat catfish. dirt cheap freshwater fish : https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/swai-fish

Other cheap freshwater fish at wal-mart are TALAPIA (yes its a river fish from a farm).

Most fathers have a backup plan to BUY A NICE FILET FROM A FISH MONGER STORE on the sad trip home after catching nothing.

Buy consolation prize trout, salmon, perch, etc for son on way home.

You will catch no game fish unless your son is Grizzly Adams or watched 40 hours of fishing television shows.

If you are non-White you can poach fish using illegal fishing techniques and NEVER GO TO JAIL... if you look Indian, or Hispanic you can use NETS on a Powerboat and not go to jail. You can use dynamite (M-350 quarter sticks normally) to stun all fish in a pond that are large and get them to float belly up. No jailtime unless you are White. No.... I am not kidding.

If you do just give up and catch a bucket and a half of little tasty sunfish.... USE A HAND CRANK FISH SKINNER to peel off scales and skin together. Easy! Fun! Fast. And sun fish and other "junk fish" actually taste amazing lightly battered and fried! TASTY.

If you live near a large ocean harbor, there are traditionally uneaten large fish that are beyond trivial to catch. So much fish! Its fish species that only niggers and long islanders eat though.

Upvoting this because you made me hungry and sentimental.

Good Luck! chances are highest that you will catch nothing this first trip, as I gave you the odds.

Man I can't imagine doing something that boring consistantly. Do you not just zone out and think about other stuff? That's what I usually do.

[ - ] cyclops1771 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 3, 2021 11:19:52 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah, that's what I try to avoid, so that I don't "APPEAR" bored.

For him, he says he likes it because it's a skill that he can get better at, and it takes him away from all the pressures of life - there is no pressure in fishing, just go out and sit there. You don't HAVE to catch a fish. You don't HAVE to get the largest, you don't HAVE to get 'x' fish in by 'Y' deadline. Basically, it is the opposite of most other aspects of life. Allegedly.

Suggestions:

Find a spot where you can leave the rods in the water and do other outdoor activities nearby enough you can keep an eye on the rod (fire building, foraging, weapon making, whittling even whatever floats your boat) learn a bit more about fishing with your son, bring a projector and a white sheet so at night time you can watch fishing shows. Take him to a fishing supply shop, the bigger the better, try sea fishing, try catching edible fish so you can cook it on a fire, bring some books you would want to share with your son that mean something to you and represent how you see the world. Bring some boxing gloves or a baseball glove etc. He'll remember these things for the rest of his life

Basically spice it up a bit but show a decent amount of interest in the actual fishing too.

[ - ] AlfonsHilter 1 point 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 14:39:03 ago (+1/-0)

It depends on what kind of fishing it is. The most interesting for me is flyfishing as it's not just basically standing/sitting in one place for long periods of time and it's basically the only fishing i do nowadays.
If he's into fishing generally i urge to research more about flyfishing and here's a nice link with some basic knowledge:
https://anchorfly.com/fly-fishing-for-beginners/

Beer.. lots of beer. Probably a 24 pack of something low alchol so you don't get hammered on the water... natural light will do the trick and cheap.... 6 beers in it will become slightly more enjoyable.. also cigars will help

[ - ] Thisisallstupid 1 point 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 13:13:45 ago (+1/-0)

Worms, a small hook, a weight and a bobber. My 4 and 6 year olds caught 10, apiece day before yesterday all by themselves in a 3 hour stint. Some with no worm at all, just the hook. Mostly crappy with a few largemouth bass. I just had to put worms on and take hooks out. Super easy and fun

[ - ] SulemanSeinfeld 1 point 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 13:10:40 ago (+1/-0)

I used to love fishing so much as a kid, I got caught shoplifting lures.

Not so much now, I just boat often. Anyway, what really got me into it was making my own lures. My grandpa bought me this huge kit with all the supplies to melt lead for my spinner bait heads, rubber, fly tying stuff etc. Catching a nice bass on a blue/chartreuse spinner bait I had made myself was tits.

Tenkara fishing for pan fish can be a good time for the little ones too.

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 1 point 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 12:48:12 ago (+1/-0)

Fishing and catching are two different things. When I go fishing, it's all about sitting quietly in nature, watching the birds, having a beer or two, and maybe catching a fish. If you look at it like catching fish is the most important part you're doing it wrong. The most important part is hanging out with your son and enjoying nature. If that's boring to you, well I don't think catching fish is gonna help you.

Sounds to me like you need to self reflect on why you need to enjoy everything that you are doing in a given moment. Isn’t the joy your child is going through enough? No, you have to be having fun or it’s not worth it!

You’re too selfish, enjoy the time with your son because he’s having fun.

[ - ] paul_neri 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 3, 2021 00:32:05 ago (+0/-0)

depends on your company doesn't it? Like if you've got nice company, what's on the end of your pole fades into insignificance.

Well, fishing gives you time for a nice chat. It's also a good activity to do while eating. You can also experiment with ideas to catch more fish. Don't just be good at it,excel!

[ - ] heygeorge 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 22:51:55 ago (+0/-0)

You don’t need a boat, that’s just more bullshit to deal with. And fishing off a canoe or kayak is... well it depends what you are fishing for. Blumen was right, timing matters. Just after dawn or a bit before dusk is the ticket. You have a nearby stocked stream? Good. Ask someone you know who actually fishes for a decent spot recommendation. You’ll be more excited by fishing if you can go when they bite and at a place where they like to hang out. The other fun parts are cleaning them and eating them.

[ - ] Hadrian 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 20:43:58 ago (+0/-0)

Fishing isn't about fishing. It's about being out in nature, just hanging out with good people.

If your kid is really into the types of local fish, or the success rate of certain lures or whatever, all the better for him. But you go fishing to have quality conversations (or spend some quality silence) with your kid. You won't regret it when he's older and doesn't have as much time with you.

[ - ] RecycledElectrons 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 20:17:46 ago (+0/-0)

Make sure you have a @#%$ fishing license, same as you have a hunting license.

Ask at a few bait shops or in forums specific to that area what people fish for, and how they catch it.

Fishing off a boat dock can yield lots of small fish, but watch of snakes. It's not worth getting bit.

Paying a fishing guide can be expensive but worth it. A good guide can take 3 to 7 people in boat and teach you how to do it. Be clear that you do not know what you are doing, and that you have no gear.

[ - ] AloisH 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 20:01:33 ago (+0/-0)

Speaking of things, how do you make the fish bite the hook? How much line should jbe between hook and lure?

If you are not interested you cant force yourself to become interested. Put in an earbud, turn on an audio book or some music, and ride it out.

[ - ] TerryB 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 17:09:21 ago (+0/-0)

I don't golf and the odd time I have to golf (company tournament, etc.) I don't really like it. That being said I would watch videos on golf to get a little into it and then play a few video games of golf to get into it a bit more. So what I am suggesting is that you watch videos on Youtube about people fishing for the type of fish you and your son go out for. Might help get in the mind set.

[ - ] TerryB 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 17:04:43 ago (+0/-0)

Can you eat the fish you catch? That gets me excited. Putting food on the table.

I'm not a fishing guy, but even if rod fishing in waders isn't your thing, maybe you could try something else?

Kayak fishing

Noodling

Fish trapping

Spear fishing

Bow fishing

Shark fishing

Trawling

Whaling

* Fucking whole sticks of dynamite into the lake and seeing what floats

Plenty more fish in the sea. I'd imagine so long as there's wildlife and water your son would probably enjoy himself just as much.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 15:06:11 ago (+0/-0)

Is frog gigging legal there?
That can be fun, plus you don't have to be up at the crack of dawn.
Other than that, just learn a good hook knot or two so you aren't losing them to snags (the biggest fun-killer, in my opinion.)
You can also go crawdadding for bait (which is only fair because those little bastards are always stealing bait.)

[ - ] ItsOk2bArian 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 2, 2021 14:54:44 ago (+0/-0)

Try using active lures that require you to be more involved by constantly reeling them in and recasting. Simulating an injured fish keeps the hands busy and distracts the mind. It can be zen if you get meditative
