Caught dinner in my little creek.

The kids said they saw a turtle. They didn't say it was a large goddamn snapping turtle. I won't have a scale until tomorrow. Size 12 boot, so make your predictions on the weight.

Snapping turtles can get fucked though. Painted turtles, sliders, box turtles, yeah fair enough... But alligator snapping turtles in particular aren't hatched from eggs, they emerge straight from Hell.

I for got to mention, when you clean it, cut the jaws so that it can't bite you're kids. That fucker will stare at you the whole time you clean it and it's heart will beat a few hours after you harvest. Yeah, they're pretty cool.

It is, but I'm not doing that. He'll live, well fed, in my possession for a couple weeks until his system is cleaned out. Then, off with his head. The part you're possibly confused about is what happens after it's dispatched. Turtles don't stop moving for hours despite being "dead". They still scratch, walk around, the head will still try to bite while off his body, and it's muscles will spasm.

If you catch me trying to circumcise the animal, then you've got an argument.

Ya know, there's a couple species of turtles that are legal to harvest down here. I've actually been thinking about catching a few and learning how to slaughter them. Do they have enough meat for the effort involved?

It depends if it's something you and your family will enjoy eating whether or not it's worth the effort. There's a lot of meat on a large snapper.

That is a pretty small one. You won't get much meat from him as he is not very old. I'd guess 10 - 12 pounds total and meat harvest would be meager. I have turtle nets that my gramp and I made years ago and I personally would let him grow a few more years. I shoot for 15 to 18+ pounders, minimum. You will see what I mean when you clean him, they're all bone and guts.

If you have something to keep him in feed him a shit ton of pan fish and veggies all summer and then harvest.

Cool, I believe ya because I was wondering about your gravel and it looks about right, but I don't know.

I clean mine out for two weeks in a trough I got from the farm supply store with just veggies and the fish taste in the meat dissipates. Just an fyi, been eating them my whole life.

I just moved out here, and I'll be damned if the floor scale isn't still at the other house. It won't be scientific, just me holding him minus me alone. It's hard for me to wait a full 2 weeks!

Yeah, I seen that. Some people are just plain dumb and it just makes me chuckle. You can't really blame them though, they are just ignorant of what it takes to clean and eat them. Rattlesnake is the same way. Just because you cut their head off doesn't mean they die right away. They just aren't like other animals.

Ok, me dressed with boots and a sidearm = 184lbs. Me holding the turtle = 207lbs. That's 23lbs.

That's awesome!! Yeah, I found if you clean them out for a couple weeks it takes away most of the fishy taste. You can also brine the meat for about 2 hours before you cook it and that will help too. At least that's what I do. Enjoy man.

Them sucker's can climb fences too, so beware if you have him just fenced in. That's why I bought the trough and I put a weighted board on top of it. Damn ninja turtles.

We ate it about an hour ago. I got right at 8lbs with the bones. I was actually surprised at the size of the pile once it was all fried up.

This was the easiest one I've ever cleaned.

Hell yeah! I was just reading the comments on this thread and I can't believe the stupidity that some of these people exude. One thing is for sure, yours and my family will have enough food if shit hits the fan. You should make you a net or two. They definitely come in handy when you want some fresh turtle meat. It's not very hard to make the netting. I'm glad you enjoyed your meal though. It's something that feels good when you catch and clean your own food to provide for your family.

I previously mentioned the stupidity from other users! I don't intend to lose a single pound if the shtf, and I'm happy you folks won't either.

This area is thick with turtle and whitetail and tasty birds. I like the net idea. I've also caught some decent crayfish in my creek, so a trap is in the works.

I call the boys "my scouts in the field" since they found the snapper. They were very proud horking down their dinner.

I bread and fry mine to brown them and then put the pieces in a roaster and slow cook them a couple hours. Delicious.

People do live of the land. I hunt and fish all year round and snapping turtle is definitely on the list. I have at least 20 pounds of turtle meat in my freezer as we speak. I also have duck, geese, deer, and rabbit. What the fuck is wrong with you? Don't be afraid to try new things.

I cleaned her out on veggies for 2 weeks and ate the turtle tonight. I counted the rings and she was at least 100 years old. I was happy to fry her up. I bet she was carrying 300 eggs that would have easily hatched into more turtles.

If you do or don't believe any of that stupidity, you're still a faggot and I'm still full of fried turtle.
