Well you see, baby quail are almost too stupid to live. And not like 80/20, like 51/49 too stupid (maybe 49/51). If they get wet, they typically die. The marbles help prevent this.
It also seems like the marbles prevent too much bedding from getting kicked into the water and plugging the holes. Maybe?
Interesting, a friend of mine kept ducks and she said the eggs were unpalatable and the birds were assholes. Is there an advantage over chickens?
I assume the reason to use them over quail eggs is because there's more volume and the taste difference is going to be diluted by the bread/fillings anyhow.
I wonder what kind of ducks she kept? If she said geese, I'd agree. Goose eggs are not as tasty and most are born assholes.
The average person wouldn't know the difference beyond the duck egg being slightly larger and harder to crack. The yolk:egg ratio is slightly higher than a chicken egg, too. The size is why I prefer them on a sandwich.
I have chickens too, but I rarely eat their eggs over duck or quail.
I think my ducks are easier and hardier and cooler to watch than chickens. I can count on one hand the number of duck hatchlings I've lost. I can't say the same for chickens (quail especially).
I had the quail sub over on poal, but I don't check it anymore. You can check out all the information if you want but message me here.
She said "just normal ducks" didn't know what kind. She also said she fed them regular poultry food and kitchen scraps, same as the chickens.
Hmmm, I do like yolk so that sounds like a good option.
Interesting about the chick loss issue. I saw a video once where a guy used a hen to foster some ducklings. She went nuts every time they went for a swim. She couldn't understand they weren't going to drown.
Thanks for the heads up. I don't use poal anymore except for /s/movieswithgoats reminders, if you make a quail sub here though I'd be interested.

I could swear I've heard that said before about another bird species, but I can't quite recall, off-hand.
Clever solution, though.
