My chickens love corn. I buy frozen bags and poor it in a bowl with some hot water. All I have to do is say the word “corn”, and they come running.

One of those little blondies started laying just a couple days ago now, it's great.

And they liked defrosted corn one time as well, A LOT! Then, for some reason, the next time I gave them some, they were completely disinterested in it. Moody spoilt little shits.

Then, a couple days ago, we ran out of scratch for them, and they enjoy that stuff, so my wife found some old birdseed we had just laying around. The black one [Schwartzie] pecked out all the sunflower seeds as fast as she could.

That's what the girls were having so they gave them some as well. Chickens will eat anything.

That makes sense. I don't know fuck all about chickens other than they taste good, lay eggs, and their shit is slippery.

They'll also eat each other's eggs from time to time, and will eat chicken if you feed it to them.

If you hold them when they are young, and stay near them they'll be quite friendly. Ours run to us when we go out near their area.

If you get a batch of egg layers, and a few males, you'll discover one male at a time, while the others lay dormant, looking like a female. If you remove that dominant male, the next most dominant male will 'become' a male. It's frustrating if you have a line up of males you thought were all female.

So far, we've only ever gotten males. We were assured these are all hens... but time will tell, of course.

If you ever have a raccoon problem, shoot them and put them in a bucket with holes in the bottom. Hang the bucket above the chickens and they get to eat the maggots that fall out. Now you have a raccoon gift.

most hatcheries won't guarantee sexing the birds. pretty sure I have a rooster or two in my flock. for sure a Tom turkey. he strutted at me.

Heh, that sounds about right. We were about 60:40 for female to male, but several of the chicks we got were not pre-sexed, so I suppose it worked out OK.

We're down to eight chickens overall and they produce enough eggs for our family and enough on the side to sell and effectively pay for the chicken feed.

I always buy sexed so I get girls. We spend a lot of time with our peeps, and they are like kids. It’s fun to watch them get all excited about something they are about to get or when they are let out. They run to gate like little kids ready to go play. Chickens are the best.
