Europeans had no mandate in Middle East just because some local population there was "Christian".

It was a mistake to adopt a foreign religion which worships Abraham's God. Christian religion may be very beautiful, but it is a Semitic cult which does not originally belong to European culture.
The Crusaders had a mandate to come to the defense of Byzantium, a dominantly Greek empire. They were also reclaiming territory for Christendom against a hostile force that was likely coming for them at some point. It wasn't a bad idea to try and contain the virus before it kept expanding and got stronger.
