Based on the text I guess these are called planted aquariums. It seems like a little pond ecosystem though.

been watching that channel for a few years, you should checkout the series of the tank with no filter he makes a relatively self sustaining ecosystem, it is really great

I've had Cherry shrimp, they are cute they do love living in filters though.
