England during the reign of the Anglo-Saxons had strict laws against usury which we can see with the laws that was implemented by the King Alfred;

''The laws of King Alfred about A.D 900, ordained that the personal effects of money lenders should be forfeited to the King, their lands and inheritances to the lord under whom they were held, and they should not be buried in consecrated ground.''

These anti-usury laws were expanded upon with the reign of Edward the Confessor;

''By the laws of Edward of the Confessor, passed about the year of our Lord 1050, the money lender forfeited all his substance and was outlawed. Sir Robert Filmer, in a treatise published in 1678, erroneously states, that, with the exception of a clause in the Council of Calcluith, about the year 787, interest had not been prohibited in England, until the reign of Edward the Confessor, A.D. 1045 :- and that this monarch, having been educated in France, and been 'seasoned with the principles of the kingdom,' banished money lenders from England''

Jews had a monopoly on money lending not only in England but in nearly every other European, they became leaders of commerce, and the chief bankers;

''It is however certain that the prohibition existed, and that its operation was such that the practice of lending money on interest was confined almost wholly to the Jews, who had in England, and in nearly every other European country, become the leaders of commerce and the chief bankers''

The successor of Edward the Confessor was Harold Godwinson and he was as harsh against usury as his predecessor. But his reign was a very short one as he and England was made an enemy of the chief bankers of Europe thus now a target. Thus the Anglo-Saxon rule of England came into an end due to the Norman invasion under the hands of 'William the Conqueror'.


William the Conqueror brought Jews from Rouen to England.

William encouraged Jews to follow him to England, mainly merchants and craftsmen. Thus jews from mainly France followed, but jews in Germany, Italy and Spain also flocked to England. Jews were well regarded by the Norman Kings and their main-role in England was... can you guess?
Money lenders... but of course..

Why was William the Conqueror doing this? Because he was obviously financed by them and there is a strong possibility that he himself might have been a member of the tribe;

So what type of damage did the jews do to England once they settled there?

1. Drain the wealth of the people through money-lending;

Being that Christians were forbidden to loan money at interest, jews had a total monopoly on money lending in England. Lending money at interest was a jews primary source of income. They provided loans for many of the most important figures at the royal court.

The successor of William the Conqueror was William the II or Rufus became his successor and he like, his father, allowed jews to engage in usury under royal protection which he himself profited out of. Jews also lent money to the crown with interest and to pay off this interest Rufus heavily taxed the English people, making both him and jews more resented by the people.

Stephen Goodson further writes in his article 'In Praise of Medieval England A golden age' writes;

''The moneylenders charged princes and other noblemen interest rates of at least 33 per cent per annum on lands which they had mortgaged. The working class, who pledged their tools of trade or chattels, were expected to pay rates of up to 300 per cent per annum. Not unexpectedly, within two generations one quarter of all English lands were in the ownership of Jewish usurers''.

So how rich could a jew get in England in this period through money-lending?

If we look at Aaron of Lincoln (1130-1186), then the jew could become more influential and more rich than even the English king himself.

''''Aaron of Lincoln (ca 1130-1186) was one of the most influential Jewish figures in twelfth-century England. A moneylender, he was estimated to be worth £100,000 at the time of his death, quite possibly making him wealthier than Henry II himself''.

''Aaron was a powerful man, with powerful connections. We know he made loans to Robert de Chesney, the Bishop of Lincoln, and to Henry II''

He was allowed to practice money lending with royal protection;

''The crown, having provided Aaron with the ‘protection’ to conduct money-lending in life''

2. Gaining monopoly in the merchant business.

Stephen Goodson in his article 'In Praise of Medieval England A golden age' writes;

'Another practice which incensed the English merchants was the custom of Jewish traders of selling a whole range of merchandise under one roof. Items such as candles, cloth, iron, leather, silver- ware which were normally sold in separate shops, were all disposed of in a bazaar type operation. The greed of these traders caused both anger and impoverishment amongst the merchant class and undermined the guilds''

The jews were basically running a department store back in middle age England to take out competition coming from gentile merchants. They most likely sold their goods at a lower price because they had tribal connections outside of England in which they could import goods cheaply from other nations just to then sell them cheaply in England to snuff out competition from gentile merchants to gain monopoly. Once the competition is snuffed out then they can sky rocket the prices of their goods. Just like how department stores work today.

3. Refusing to assimilate to English society and showing resentment to the English people and Christianity as they grew in wealth;

According to William Cunningham in his book ''The Growth of English Industry and Commerce: During the Early and Middle Ages''

He states that jews;

''They had no place in the social system, but were personal chattels of the king'' ( I will disagree that they were 'personal chattels of the king'', It was probably the other way around and it's not like they wanted to be part of the English social system anyway, they always self-segregate)

''They had a different ethical code- Talmudic and not Christian- in regard to lawful trading, and they had at all events no readiness to betake themselves to actual labour''

''They were said to be more outspoken in their contempt of Christianity as they grew in wealth, and the story of their attacking a religious procession at Oxford serves at all events to illustrate the embittered feeling which existed, and which rendered it impossible for the Jews to live under the protection of ordinary law of the land''

4. Jewish Ritual Murder

Another thing that fueled the rage of the English people against the jews was the evil and horrific practice of jewish ritual murder, in which during passover, the jews will kidnap a gentile christian child, usually a boy to then ritually murder the child, drain the childs blood then to use that blood for their sick occultist rituals. Such horrific incidences was never heard of in England until jews arrived in England. These murders stopped when the jews were expelled.

Not all jews were expelled however. Some did manage to remain behind, but still, they weren't able to pull of the same shenanigans as they did prior to 1290. Also, King Edward according to William Cunningham in the same book mentioned above;

''Did everything in his power to alleviate the misery which their banishment must have caused them. The strongest inducement was put on English men to pay their debts to the Jews before they departed and those who did pay a moiety to the Jews remained in debt to the Crown for the full amount due, till it was remitted by Edward III.''

So despite getting expelled, they still managed to steal more money from the English before departing and the English which was unfairly indebted to the jew only had a few months to pay back everything (from 18 July to 1 November) or be punished. Yeah, and the jew paint themselves as the victims here?

AFTER JEWISH EXPULSION:

Economic prosperity was reported in England was reported once the jews were expelled. England became the envy of Europe;
