It's easy for us to hear this stuff and brush it off but in context of the time, this was extremely innovative and very avant-garde. Recurring motifs (what Wagner would later call "leitmotifs") were quite popular in the Romantic era; Beethoven, a Classical composer, was a significant figure in the transition from Classical to Romantic.
