The very famous "& 2& 1" fragment is known as the "Fate Motif" and is heard in some form in all four movements.
It's easy for us to hear this stuff and brush it off but in context of the time, this was extremely innovative and very avant-garde.
Recurring motifs (what Wagner would later call "leitmotifs") were quite popular in the Romantic era; Beethoven, a Classical composer, was a significant figure in the transition from Classical to Romantic.
