I remember those big debates on Voat. They were actually right - small, subject oriented subs actually need to stay on topic, as the smaller the subject, the less active it will be, and below a certain activity level, it dies.

Given that it was proven later that many on Voat were controlled opposition (I did work on this too), it makes sense that false-flagging censorship when jannies try to keep their subs on topic was actually a controlled op aimed at killing the future of the site. It left only the political refugees, so to speak.
