Which original? There are three movies from 1912 that could qualify. There's also one from 1929 and 1933. The one from my poster is the 1943 version, but inbetween that one and the Hollywood travesty, there's still a version from 1953, one from 1958, 1964, 1980 and 1992 each.

I never saw the German one, but might have to look into it sometime.

The 1997 one had some pretty impressive parts. (Kate Winslet's boobs) But seriously, despite the corny plot and characters they did a great job with the ship itself.

Did I mention boobies? That had to hold me over for a time as spank bank material when I was stuck in the Navy with no access to either real pussy or other spank material.

The one from 1943 also does the poor guy from the lower deck locked up in prison when water comes in, but he doesn't matter and his friends save him anyway. He was locked up for starting a knife fight, though. Not sure if the 1997 version copied that part, too.

Anyway, I can recommend the 1943 version. It's a good movie that is better at showing people from that time period and their motivations. The weirdest part is how some people think the good guy in the movie is a Nazi officer, when in reality not a single German even appears in the movie. Of course, all the actors are German, but none of the characters are.
