Hitler's decisions in 1942, overriding his generals, were a bad idea, in my opinion. He got greedy and overconfident.

Cut off Rostov, cut off Persia. Control Crimea/Sevastopol. Secure the Don. These were acceptable and fine objectives for Army group South in 1942.

WHy did he re-write these, and push for crossing the Volga and seizing Baku in 1942? Was it the landing of American troops in Morocco and Algiors? Did he panic?

By November, the Wehrmacht had overextended lines of supply, they could not get further anyways. Pull back to the Don in November, stockpile material, and sally forth in the spring. Use air power to disrupt Volga traffic. Recall Rommel and the AfrikaCorps. Use them to spearhead 1943 offensive in USSR, where you send the entire Army group south against the city, instead of half. AfrikaCorps as a reserve/breakthrough unit could have got them to the oilfields in 1943.,

Not letting the 6th army retreat back to the Don when it was clear that they could not hold the west bank of the Volga, nor sending in the other half of Army group up from the south to smash them out when encircled was nigh on criminal.

You had 2 Wehrmacht armies facing 5 Soviet, and later 14 Soviet armies, with no re-supply, and no re-inforcement.

I wish they WOULD have disobeyed him and pulled back to the Don in November 1942.
