Personal experience of watching at least a dozen different drunk idiots fall into these things at various parties over the years. People get inebriated, then all it takes is an ill-advised step backward.

I wonder if anyone ever thought of putting a retracting lid on it, that can conceal the pit when not in use. Then it would be less of a death trap. A railing would ruin the look of it.

Not for an adult, but imagine having to keep a toddler from falling in that. I guarantee this is why they don't put them in houses any more. It was popular with the boomer generation during their cocaine and key party phase. Once they settled down and had kids of their own, they realized that one of the early milestones of parenting, babyproofing the home, is made harder by there being a big hole in the floor.

I'd softly light the perimeter of the pit. Like an LED rope buried in the lip so that theres a soft glow all around the edge. That amount of visual cue would cure a lot of that.
