This is a cool idea, but the example is pretty bad. Instead of printing the figure standing up, just print it laying down. That would reduce waste just as much and be very simple.

I saw an example where the bed lifts and rotates to different angles to prevent the need for supports. also interesting.

Laying the figure down may leave undesirable layer artifacts. Most of my prints i do vertically if I can, even if I print at 0.08mm. But i mostly print small stuff with fine detail.

Good point. I'm not very experienced with 3d printing and hadn't considered layer artifacts. That is a strong reason to print a certain orientation.
