While I am impressed, you are not using enough land. I also don't see how you are blocking vermin and such. I'm just going to shut up.

Great job!

E: Also, I'm a shit city slicker that dreams of having a garden 1/4 that size ... okay, may not. I want a garden sixteen times plus that size, haha.

E2: Also, love the property and trees in the background. I get to look at row homes and asphalt across from me. I am so jealous. So fucking jealous.

E3: I can't breathe.

You'd be surprised how much work a garden half the size of ours is :) Mostly on the preserving side of things. Another thing to consider is that our garden is turning out a good bit more food than just me and my wife can eat, so we end up sharing with people.

We do want to use the front 10 acres for growing a crop for profit.

... so we end up sharing with people.

That is sweet!

I can't see in the pick but if you're doing corn and beans you can add squash, run a 'three sisters' type layout to save space.

I've never tried that, but I have heard about it. Mostly haven't tried because we start our squash and beans indoors under our grow lights that way we don't have to thin after we plant in the garden. Would be neat to try though. Space isn't really an issue. Our garden is 60'x70', and we have acres to spare behind the house, plus 10 acres in front of the house.

nice. Fry those green tomatoes- delicious insanity will ensue.

My wife likes them that way, but I've never had the taste for them. Ended up with three island countertop full harvests last year: https://www.voat.xyz/viewpost.php?postid=604da878562cb

In our area, we do two crops of broccoli, one in spring, and one in fall. Summer is too hot for them so they just end up bolting the whole time. Pic is from early/ middle summer, so our broccoli crop had already been taken out. Wife and I don't care as much for beets, :/ lots of peppers, beans and melons though!

the year before last a moose came along and ate the tops off all my young broccoli. I was pissed, but that ended up being my best broccoli year yet. This year I'm gonna do it myself. I got multiple good heads off each plant.

Oh, I'd be livid. We get deer, but my fence mostly deters them. Coons are our biggest nuisance as they have no issues with climbing over and pulling up small plants. They pulled up half our watermelon last year. When I redo the fence with proper wooden corner and gate posts, I'm going to add a few runs of electric fence to deter those buggers.

Just get yourself a coon to tend the garden. I had a pet one that was crazy about eating snails and slugs.

lol, I could actually ask my neighbor -- she doesn't train them but she does feed a gaze of them (like 20+).

Yes, I googled for what a group of raccoons is called.

Do you have any tips for first-time vegetable gardeners? What to grow first? How to keep soil fertilized?

[ - ] veo [op] 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2021 07:28:43 ago (+0/-0)

sticky on this sub has a good 101 video. https://www.voat.xyz/viewpost.php?postid=604af7d1840f6

Depending on space, I would start small one year and do some preliminary testing on your soil just to see how fertile your ground is, how well it drains and how much prep you might have to do to get a garden the size that you're interested in doing. Start with maybe 1 or two plants of the things you think you want to grow, but limit yourself to just a couple different types. See what works, what doesn't and you wont end up wasting all your time and energy making the mistakes we all have to learn from.

Once you know a bit more and get a good plan in order, gardening isn't really that complicated. Mostly just timing and hoping the weather cooperates.

Depending on how good your soil is to begin with, once it's to a decent level, common advice is an inch of compost a year added to the soil.

Man. Our garden from last season is all dead. You're doing really good!

you're funny! :P

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 1 point 3 yearsMar 31, 2021 00:02:55 ago (+1/-0)

Okay, I see what you have going on. It's nice, but if you are going to use one, try as tall as you and remember to prune the suckers.

[ - ] OoklaTheMok 1 point 3 yearsMar 31, 2021 00:06:25 ago (+1/-0)

And weave them in the metal fence.

[ - ] veo [op] 2 points 3 yearsMar 31, 2021 00:15:35 ago (+2/-0)

Yep! This was earlier in the growing season and they hadn't yet reached their full height. We did weave (or tie) the main trunks of the tomato plants through the panels, but we weren't having as much fruiting production as we were hoping on the sauce tomatoes (first year growing) so we were hesitant to lop of the branches that were producing. We also planted just to the outside of the panels, and this year we're going to try planting just inside - will make it easier to get the to grow into the panel without as much work from us.

4th of july tomatoes (row behind front) grew like weeds and had to be topped constantly by mid season, lol.

Not the best pic anyhow - hard to tell depth of things, everything was so green!

very nice but that grass looks invasive. Looks similar to couch but more like a bamboo-type grass.

[ - ] veo [op] 1 point 3 yearsMar 31, 2021 21:06:39 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks. The grass is awful. i hate it. I don't know anything about grass, but fuck that grass in particular.

I'm jealous of your country house. I am stick in a liberal city full of degeneracy. Faggots, feminists, niggers, Arabs, communists, ANTIFA, etc etc... full of it. It will probably be years before I can afford to move to the country, guess it's something to work towards unless I'm murdered by ZOG in the interim.

We rented for years while we moved about to take jobs to get our student loans paid off. Once those were done, we saved up while we hunted for property and put our build estimates together. Once we had enough saved for 20%, we got our construction loan and got it built. Post frame homes are quick to build, easy to do open concept plans with, and can be cheaper too depending on what you want. I can give you some more info if you'd like, feel free to pm me.

you have my sympathy. Life is so much easier in a regional area (and better).
