During the Vietnam war there was an organization called MARS (Military Auxiliary Radio System) that was manned by volunteers on HAM (amateur radio) frequencies so troops serving overseas could be linked to make phone calls to family in the US. For a brief time I was an operator and patched many calls thru to a station in Phoenix, who would them connect it thru their telephone switchboard and make long distance calls (back in the day when long distance calls were charged extra) to anywhere in the US for the troops. I later found out that the station in Phoenix was the office of Barry Goldwater, and he paid for all the long distance calls.
