Most people wouldn't want to live in a desert on Earth, why would you send yourself in a small capsule for months to live years on a desolate lifeless planet, when all the beauty is here.
The lack of Earth gravity would kill them all in short order, and there's literally no way around that. Humans are extremely sensitive to even minor gravitational changes health-wise, and Mars gravity is 1/3 that of Earths. They'd all develop serious health issues very early on, and die shortly thereafter. A Mars "colony" would likely last no longer than twenty years at most, and probably considerably less than that.
Elon never addresses this issue. We have no science to counteract the effect and probably won't for decades, if not centuries. If the man were actually seriously but permanent extraterrestrial settlement, he'd be pushing for O'Neill habitats which can at least simulate 1 G, not a dead planet whose lack of gravity will pretty much kill everyone who tries to settle on it within two decades. And that's not even addressing the horrible things it would do to any child born in such an environment.
