I thought you were having a stroke as you wrote the title. Turns out, yeah, that image is suspiciously constructed. Yes, plenty of cover art has historically eschewed proper artistic form and composition in exchange for “increased drama.” But look at how this one is laid out. It’s a woman, because it can’t be a man (since that’s sexist). Theoretically it’s a teen girl? I guess because the idea of a summer camp on a murderous nature preserve is character building. She’s splayed out on the grass. Awake, so she’s not totally opening herself up for rape, and theoretically prone, as though she has just been thrown back, but there’s a lot of her weight being supported by her left arm, where she’d otherwise naturally be supporting it with her spine. You can chalk that up to the designer not having a goddamn clue about the human body and center of mass, because no one needs to care about any of that to crank out mass-produced propaganda.

The dinosaur, though. Follow the sight lines. From where it’s facing, the girl is at its 1 or 2 o’clock. Why? Because it’s more dramatic to see a full mouth of teeth in the lateral view than to have it at the angle described by the girl’s position. This, however, begs several questions.

1. Why not have the whole image as a lateral view? You don’t see between the girl’s legs at that point (lol what is modesty), and you get to keep the view of the teeth. The answer, I’m sure, is that an image with depth has more drama. The dinosaur, imposing in the foreground, and the girl, cowering in the rear. But that’s another thing…
2. Why not do it straight on, then? Have the girl in a similar position in the middle of the frame (legs to the side, again, because sexuality isn’t supposed to be part of society) and just show two giant dinosaur legs on either side of her in the extreme foreground. You get the depth that draws the viewer into the shot and still send the same message: helpless girl, giant nigger ready to rape her.

Which brings me to the tongue. Is that what lizard tongues look like? I dunno. I’m not a herpetologist. A tongue is naturally going to sit in only the bottom half of the mouth, particularly the tongue of a non-human since it doesn’t need to go to the top, even when shouting, because it has no words to form. Here we return to the principles of art design. The viewer’s eye is naturally led around a piece of art, and it’s the artist’s job to convey a message through the subtle guiding of the eye to where he wants it.

Where does the tongue point. Where does the viewer’s eye naturally go, following the direction of the tongue.
