Profit prisons are bad but I think it's ultimately a deflection from the idea of prisons not working how we wish they would. The entire system needs reform.
How you want them to work is illogical and impossible. You can't reform people. Maybe a tiny minority of people simply went wrong somewhere and can be shown a better way of living. For the vast majority of people that is just not possible. Prison is a time out. The time they spend in prison they don't have to commit more crimes. As long as there are options for them to learn in prison that is all you can do. Offer them the opportunity to use their time in prison to develop a marketable skill. That's all you can do. If they don't want it, then they don't want it.
