Absolutely. They get a bad rap because they're not fast off the line. If you know the car and how it operates and how you have to maintain high rpms they can be fucking demons.
Had the dreaded 04' RX-8. Dreaded because the engines had some issues and you had to be on top of maintenance. A lot of folks bought automatics which was a death sentence for that engine. It wouldn't go past 5 rpms out of 9 and it needed to to clear carbon. You also couldn't skimp on the gas grade or oil changes at all.
I did some modifications to mine like lowering it 1.5", replaced pulleys with adonized aluminum, new air intake, more rigid sway bars and endlinks, stage 1 clutch and other visual stuff like LED lights for tail lights and such. Got rid of the amber side markers and installed clear ones with white LEDs.
That car made me feel more safe than any other car. It responded immediately to any braking, steering, acceleration. At 120mph it just sounded like a well oiled drill. No shakes no worries.
