In 2014, gaming’s crunch culture, E3 parties, and indie devs’ funding struggles set a tense stage. Feminist critiques, like Anita Sarkeesian’s 2012–2014 Tropes vs. Women, sparked backlash for decrying sexist tropes. Zoe Quinn’s 2013 game Depression Quest, about mental health, drew praise but scorn as “SJW” propaganda.
